Deadspin posts the Favre pics. Ugh.

To me, that was a fair question until the press conference when Favre was asked about the allegations, and he didn't deny anything.

Think about that. If you're the innocent victim of false audio recordings and cock shots and national debate, wouldn't your instant and overwhelming reaction be, 'This is an outrageous fraud!'? What's the benefit of saying 'not talking about that now?'

Some part of this story is true, you can bet on it.

On the other hand, there may be no group in the world that's better at just sitting on a story until all the air gets let out of it. There have been a lot of things in the NFL over the years that sounded like they were going to be a big deal but didn't end up being. Michael Irvin damn near killed a teammate and he never missed a game for that.

I can understand why he didn't want to say anything at that given time, probably because he didn't want it to become a distraction for the team. Didn't want to feed the fire, then again, that's so not Brett Favre.

To me, the whole story stinks from both ends. Do I think it could be true? Yes. Do I think it could be a crock of shit? Of course. I think the trump card for me is the third party. It just all seems a bit outrageous.

I mean, nobody really bought the story when it was first posted a month or so ago, and the guy wanted to cover his ass here ... He still doesn't have Sterger on the record, so all of a sudden, a third party appears with cock shots that could anybody.

Also, I believe the NFL is just sitting on this. If they wanted to get phone records, they could just get them. I'm sure it's not that hard.

If this story was proven to be a fake, Deadspin would be done.

The story is not a fake though. The story made the rounds among NFL types before the first Deadspin report came out. Apparently, Sterger reported it to the Jets when it happened and it was semi-ignored or she wouldn't provide the pics/proof. Once he left the team, they didn't really seem to care if it got out. Supposedly Daulerio sat on the story for a long time before he published it.

The big rumor now is that it was someone with the Jets who directly or indirectly got the voice mail and the pics to Deadspin. The fact that this came out the week the two teams play is obviously not a coincidence.

It also depends if Favre has a team issued phone. That already got him in trouble once when he used a Packers issued phone to call Matt Millen a couple years back.

No question it would be done. But it's not going to be an issue.

Brett Favre declined to comment Sunday on the allegations he sent inappropriate messages and photos via cell phone to former Jets sideline reporter Jenn Sterger when he played for the team in 2008.

In a production meeting with ESPN for Monday night's game against the Jets, the Vikings quarterback told the network only that neither he nor his agent had been contacted by the NFL about the matter.

"My main focus is the New York Jets, they are a tough team; as good as they are that has been my focus," Favre told ESPN. "I hate in any way if this has been a distraction as I said Thursday -- we are here focused on trying to beat the Jets."

Favre did not deny the allegations -- just as he did not deny them Thursday during his weekly news conference at Winter Park. When asked about the accuracy of the reports, he said, "That will take its course."

I'm sure the Twins were thrilled by his show of support Thrusday.

It says a lot that he's not denying anything.

Maybe. Or maybe he's playing a little poker, bleeding the clock, whatever. In Deadspin's fantasy world the masseusses will confirm the story. In reality, will they take $250K in hush money? Because then it's just a bunch of unproven allegations. And the NFL can look the other way as long as there's no police report, lawsuit or other official document.

Not so sure that says a lot for Favre. I mean, when he says he's retiring ...

The NFL can't afford to look the other way, not after they went nuts over than whole Ines Saintz deal, which is nothing compared to a sexual harassment claim by a NFL employee(s) and its most famous player.
