Here's one theory that has been tossed about in the news room: The guy has Alzheimer's and has forgotten his wife (the person he asks about every day) has died, so he calls here.

No one knows the guy's name because he won't give us his information. And we don't have caller ID on our phones unless they leave a voice mail.

Is it me, or do old people love agate beyond reason?

We had a couple of voicemails from old folks calling and asking why we didn't have agate in Saturday's paper.

We didn't have agate in the paper because we had six pages of local content. This is impressive because we're a small daily and our typical Saturday paper has 1.5 pages of local content.

    Just a tad frustrating.

Agate or the TV guide. Don't mess with an old person's TV guide.
We have an old lady who calls us to make sure we get a sports guide into the paper. She's got to know when here Lakers play and she get's politely irate when we forget ... er ... have local copy that takes up all the space.

If they're "her" Lakers, shouldn't she be notified when they have a game? :)

Dear whoever it was who left 20 minutes of elevator music on my voicemail today (I'm guessing it was 20, I hung up after 30 seconds): WTF?

Sorry. That might have been me.

I checked my phone after a call and realized I'd forgotten to hang up.

It was only 23 minutes, though. :)

    Dear miss I-have-to-comment-on-every-story lady,
When you have an opinion on everything, often an abrasive opinion on everything, be prepared to receive some blow back. You constantly have negative things to say about other posters, and they are going to respond. So please, stop reporting as abuse anything that mentions your name without the words "I completely agree with" or "you are so right" or "your intellect makes the rest of us sound so dumb, can you please insult us some more!"
So please, get over it. Go play with your friends and please stop running to daddy every time someone is a big meanie toward you!

We cut down on agate a couple years ago...used to run boxscores for all the local preps games and such, but when hours started to get limited, that was the first thing I chopped. Too much time compiling it, and it doesn't fill enough space.

In return, I expanded our preps standings page to include more detail. That ate up the suddenly available Scoreboard page and it only requires some quick Excel sheet updates.

Heard some minor complaints, but nothing huge. I'm sure the coaches were grateful to be able to call in simple finals and highlights instead of running through the entire box every game night.

I figure those that follow the big league standings will gather that info from the league websites...of course, that's where the older crowd comes in with their complaints.

    Dear XC Parents,
No, we haven't forgotten about cross country in our season previews. Yes, they are coming soon. I've already explained to all our coaches when everything was going to appear in the paper.

So sit back and wait your turn, and stop thinking -- as one parent apparently put it in an email to their son/daughter's coach -- that we're trying to "screw over" the cross country runners by not running a season preview like we have for two sports -- that, by the way, have already started in this area. Your sport is the last to get underway, hence it's the last preview to run.

    Thanks,
    Already Agitated XC Writer

    Dear KYSportsWriter,

Im certain you know that last year Our-Cross-Country-Ladies recieved Record attendance! last year because the newspaper had a story written On Time. That's RIGHT!! ALL out girls were wached by Fans. You may say they were all related to the Ladies but they were There irregardless! Its not HARD to write a story! Whats hard is for these Young Ladies to try so hard and give up freetime on afternoons and Week-ends only to be screwed over by the Obama-minions at the "news" paper.

    Sincerly,
Bekky's MOM (or do you know who Bekky even IS?)

That is hilarious. And it sounds exactly like this one parent who's emailed in the past ...
