Even better would have been a kid who added 20 or 30 pounds of muscle in the summer. You know, explore the "How did the kid get all that muscle in such a short time?" angle.

I'm sure the parents would love to see the speculation about juicing.

True. But picking straight is too easy.

Not if all the games selected for the pick sheet are within 3-5 points in the spread.

I'm a bit confused. Was there an actual mistake, or something that just was worded strangely.

He didn't like the particular way in which the writer worded some stats on the AIDS rate among children in Haiti.

I can see his point about how someone could misinterpret what the writer said but to try to pawn it off as "If a Haitian nationalist were to read this" is laughably bad since, with the exception of a lower-income affordable housing complex and, maybe, three other houses, our entire coverage area is medium-well off white people.

Yes, just be selective in the games you pick...put ones on the list that could go either way.

sorry, but while a realize everyone on the team contributes to the Friday night win, it is impossible to list the entire roster each week, especially when I have that team slotted for a 4-inch recap spot. So, we'll stick to the QB who led the game-winning drive and the receiver who made the winning catch with 0:10 on the clock and call it good.

Feel free to pick up a program when you buy your ticket to the game...that has all the players listed and you can even highlight your grandson's name and put it in a scrapbook.

Dear football coach who I called three hours ago to get your box score from today's game:

When I call you to get your score and stats and you don't return my call, and then an hour later I see your box score on the website of the major metro that won't send a reporter to see you at all this season while we cover four or five of your games ... it really pisses me off. And makes me question why we bother to doing most of the prep sports coverage we do.

    Sincerely,

Editor who has no use for coaches who can't return a call in three hours when all we want is a box score

At Hacker...you might be better served to get in touch with the team stat guy next time you go to a game. I know in our area those of the ones that report the results, not the coach.

Often football coaches are off with their assistants reviewing the game well into the night, all of our reports come from team stat guys, usually within a half-hour of the final whistle. I'm betting that's what happened here, the stat guy called the major metro with the results and simply didn't know to add you to his report list, as well.

I'm taking out the sport here, since this single line essentially sums up my existence. Yesterday, I was waiting for football coaches. But it's also been soccer, field hockey, and, well, pretty much everything else.

And then they complain that there's nothing from the game in the paper.

You can also put a tagline in your recap section something like ....

Coaches can report results by calling XXXXXXXX or by email at podunksports.com.

We had a news-side copy editor question why we bitch about coaches not calling in...since it's OUR JOB to track down the info ourselves.

I wanted to throw something so bad at them. Yeah, I'll make sure to track down all 40-60 games each Friday night...that would get us in on time!
