    Dear Dad,
It's great that your daughter is the first soccer player to sign with a D-I team from her high school. And it's great that she has family still in this area.

But I doubt we'll do a story on her, based simply on the fact that she doesn't live here.

But, ya know...you could write a story and then send it to the paper in her area, right?

Damn it! You're costing her a scholar--

    Oh, wait.

    Nevermind.

I know it's blue font and all, but the local paper is part of the same chain we are ...

Oh...good, then you won't even get paid for it since it's a "shared" story! LOL

Great, then have that paper write it and share it with you. Hopefully, their writer's not on furlough.

Guys, may I play devil's advocate?

I get she doesn't live there anymore, but sometimes it makes for a good story to follow up on a player who is now in college from the area, especially if she is doing well in college. I don't know if the girl is riding the bench at some D-I, but having that at least in the can for a slow day doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me. I know people -- teachers, coaches, etc -- at her former school might be interested.

I've written up things on people who used to live in the area. But it's when people who want me to put in something about people who never lived in the area that sets me off. In the latter case, there's no doubt they just want me to put something in for grandma's scrapbook.

Besides, how can I screw a kid out of a scholarship if he doesn't live here? Coaches wouldn't be looking for them in my paper in the first place.

Yeah, I love the ones where the kid lived here when they were 6 and now they are a big recruit out of state or now playing for a D-I football program out of state and they want a story done. Sorry, I won't waste my time on that. I've got kids here I'm trying to ruin their scholarship chances. I don't have time to ruin his.

But at least if they already have a scholarship, I can throw them a bone once in a while when they are at college and doing well.

Uh ... the girl has NEVER lived in this area. Just her folks and some of her extended family.

Thanks for the call, but no thanks.

Well I guess I didn't realize she never lived in the area. I was confused by the line about having family "still" in this area. By all means, yes, put this in the circular file.

I don't get what's so weird about her having family still in this area. As far as I know, her parents moved to another county before she was born -- but their immediate family resides here.
