Just tell the association they remind them of an uncle they had back in Japan. They'll let anyone on then.

<I am going to throw myself to the lions here>

Is there no one here, at a small weekly or daily, who has said yes to this?

If you have one or two kids in a tournament three hours away, and you trust the assistant (that's the key), why not send him as your representative and save one of your reporters a 10-hour day. That kind of day might be worth it if your kid wins, but if he doesn't, isn't this an alternative to get the photos.

(This is all assuming you can interview the coach).

Now, I am talking really small-time here, and the right person, but it's been done on rare occasions here.

In that case, though, wouldn't that person technically be freelancing for you? If they're doing work for a news outlet, then they should have a credential.

If they want a credential just so they can be closer to the action, then there's a problem.

    Yes, Mouse. Thanks.

But in my experience this requests are usually couched in "I will get you pictures," which is why I only deal with people I trust.

    Dear pushy lady,
I'm sorry that running a photo of your officers getting sworn in for your club wasn't enough. Yes, we do run obituaries more than one day. They are paid for. No, I'm not going to exclude one to include your article to go with the photo.

I turned the person who made the request down because I'm fairly certain that the media pass he wants is so that his older son can help coach the younger son, who is in the tournament. I'd get nothing out of it even if there was a way to get him a pass.

When I worked at a bi-weekly...I allowed this since the woman had helped me out all year with pics (for free). I got her a photog pass and she took pics for me during the 1st day of the finals since I couldn't make it that day.

Not questioning your decision apeman. You know your shit.

I was just curious if anyone else had done.

Sounds like a great resource -- or a closet boot-sniffing pyromaniac.

Kudos to you for realizing his value and paying for something that you were receiving for free.

Dear jackass PR person who clearly doesn't actually care who she sends her crap to,

As interested as I am in the current weather conditions in South Dakota, as new editor of a newspaper in Rhode Island, I'm not entirely sure why this would even be remotely interesting to me or my readers.

Thank you for the email though and go Coyotes!

We had that guy at our paper too. Used to call our photographers in the middle of the night because he literally slept with a scanner. In fact, he may have had two. Guy was quite clearly nuts, but we got a hell of a lot of photos of middle-of-the-night house fires and car crashes out of it.
