The "complete with roster" had me laughing.

    So like:
    Name - Instrument - Ht./Wt. - Yr.
    Bobby Smith - Trumpet - 5-10/235 - Jr.

Did it include a home/away schedule?

Mar 1 Vs. East Jacksonwood MS (exhibition)
Mar 5 At Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow
Mar 12 Vs. Middle Downtown HS (parent's night)

Is indoor football the same idea as arena football? It's a pretty foreign term to me.

Yes. But "Arena Football" is a trademarked term. Indoor football is the same minus the nets. There are umpteen indoor leagues, but only one Arena Football League (which is in jeopardy right now due to a potential player strike).

Have I mentioned lately how much I enjoy this thread? It's easily my favorite since Boots exited via the back door.

I know in some places the state association that governs preps will also run band competitions and (not to open that can of worms) cheerleading. I've wondered, if some dimwitted editor sent me out to one of these, if I should cover it like a football or basketball game:

"Maestro, the violins were a step or two behind during the second movement, what's up with that?"
"Tiffany, what happened during that last tumbling run when you fell off the stage?"

I know it's easy to make fun of the band, but there are a lot of schools, especially predominantly black schools, where the band is a very big deal. In fact, you haven't experienced one of sport's great pleasures until you take in a SWAC football game some time and listen to the bands trying to outdo each other. Of course, that doesn't mean we should cover them on the sports pages, just sayin'...

Haven't been to a SWAC game, but schools in the SIAC are like that. It was awesome.

Plus, every couple years you have the literal battle of the bands to look forward to, when one side's tuba player bumps into another's trombone player and it's on like Donkey Kong.

  10. I've covered a fair bit of SIAC football and will attest to this.

Magic City Classic (Alabama A&M vs. Alabama State) has one of the most entertaining halftime and post game shows I've ever seen.

Nothing, however, will ever beat Jacksonville State and Troy State getting together after their game to play Sweet Home Alabama. Brings tears thinking about those days. I miss that rivalry.

It did specify what kind of saxophone or rhythm instrument the kid played.

What's funny is that as I was writing I was thinking about the Dropkick Murphys' "Tessie" video which introduced the band members as if they were ballplayers.
