I wasn't covering the game... I was on the copy desk that day. Nearly spewed my Dew when I read that one.

Still haven't heard back from our semi-pro football people. The team's owner left a voicemail from a blocked number the other day, posing as a local fan, asking why we haven't written anything about them. She had called two days earlier, so I recognized her voice. Other than that, we haven't heard a peep from anyone.

Our college league baseball team is getting similar coverage. I sent the owner, the GM and their media dink an outline of what we need and when. They've yet to do anything I've asked them to.

This week should be chock full of whiny calls. I'm actually sort of looking forward to it.

    Starting to think I'm psychic.

The baseball team's co-owner just sent me an email (ignore his typos, if you can):

"What do we need to do to get coverage prior game this week to let people know about the game. Is there any finances involves to make this happen? We are interested in working a deal for this."

I really hope he's talking about buying an ad. And I'm sort of willing to give him the benefit of the doubt there, because he's basically a functioning moron.

But it really does sound like he's trying to buy coverage, which is offensive enough. The thought that if I was going to sell out, that it would be to this paste-eater and his second-rate summer baseball league, is beyond offensive.

What level of team is this, semi-pro?

The baseball? It's a wooden-bat summer league for college kids.

Maybe you could show the media person a little more respect and not call him or her a dink?

OK, I am sorry I seem to be jumping on you, and maybe I am confused.

Wouldn't you naturally do a preview on a local summer college league team?

I mean, if he takes out an ad, great.

Is the issue that he has not given you the information? They don't have a website.

(Or local summer-league team is excellent with that stuff, but I know that teams and leagues vary greatly.)

I am sorry. I read "I am here" and translated that to the home. My mistake.

In the office, I have no issue asking her to leave so you can talk to him alone.

My approach is different in you're in the office.

We did a preview. Nice CP spread, photos, team roster, season schedule, etc...

The owner has some special event coming up at one of his games that he wants to promote. I told him to send me a news release, and I'd see what I could do.

His thought was that if he's buying an ad for this particular game, that that merits special consideration for getting editorial content in the paper.

And the media person is a dink. Not my fault. That doesn't reflect my views on media people in general. Just this specific one.
