Why even allow free advertising in the first place?

"Why yes sir...John Madden IS still alive. Yup, he just retired from TV...but thanks for calling on deadline."

that's a great question. give it to the non-profits at the non-profit ad rate ad rate and let them include what they want. i've actually heard ad folks talking people out of paying for an ad and running a brief instead ... and we wonder why newspapers fail.

Whenever people send something that involves paying money (camp, joining a team, etc.) at my shop and want to run it as a brief, I delete the email.

I should say that's slight hyperbole. I do try to be judicious about what I put in though.

You know, my aunt asked me about John Madden on Thanksgiving. Wish I'd read this thread sooner!

We are 160 miles away from South Bend and have not had a beat writer for them for 20+ years...but please, keep calling and emailing us about how much we suck for the "lack of coverage" we do on the Golden Domers.
I guess running pretty much every AP story that comes across the wire isn't good enough?

    Fuck you Catholics.

Compare and contrast: Calls now vs. calls during Weis era.

A truer public service, then, would be a call to the local transit agency to find out where the bandwagon will stop in the suburbs before proceeding dowtown.

We only run nonprofits in our calendar/briefs -- and that's mainly in the news section nowadays. Anyone else can buy an ad.
