This would be my take as well. The office staff at two of my former places were incredibly passive-aggressive when it came to sports, since you do get to come in late and sleep in if you want. Of course, it's hard to convince them that the tradeoff is covering high school girls basketball games of 37-25 instead of being with pals at the bar.

Bullshit. Tell her she doesn't set the schedule and you don't work set hours like the rest of the ham-and-eggers. As long as you are putting in (at least) 40 hours a week, why is it her business when you get there?

But ham-and-egger receptionists are naturally passive-aggressive.

If you're not in the office, you're not working.

A few weeks ago an older woman called me because she was going on vacation and wanted delivery of her paper stopped during that time.
I gave her the circulation department's number. She said she called it and was put on hold for 20 minutes. She said she called back a few more times, spent a total of an hour on the phone and never got through to anyone.
I felt bad for her but there wasn't anything I could do.
When I got off the phone I found the circulation department's e-mail and wrote them about it. OK, so maybe there was something I could have done. I hope they got the message.

You did exactly what you're supposed to do ... let circulation know they are effing up.

This lady isn't so much passive aggressive as she is just dumb. She also does our classified ads and is supposed to paginate them each day. About a month ago, she is leaving for the night and was asked where the pages were. She hadn't done them. Got OT because she was screwing around all day and forgot to do her job.

I pretty much see her for four hours until she goes home then I'm still here another six, at least.

I'm glad folks at my shop know not to expect any sports guy in before 2 p.m. each day.

I am coming in later as I grow more and more exhausted.

Yep, that tends to be the trend. I found it was easier to work later, sometimes staying til 2 or 3 am, than to come in early to work on something because late at night there weren't interruptions. Of course, if the project required contacting people via phone instead of email, that didn't work so well.
