Well, 40 games over a seven-week span doesn't seem too unreasonable if you have a handful of doubleheaders thrown in (so less than 40 actual dates). Sort of like an American Legion schedule.

I'm sure pitching can be a major issue, but wouldn't that be the case across the board? I've been in places where the opposite was the case: a team might have several pretty good pitchers and some complain that one isn't getting enough innings because there aren't enough innings to go around. Seen several cases where a guy has to play the field as an underclassman and only gets to pitch as a senior, yet turns out to be pretty darn good.

Things must have changed since the stone ages of the '80s. My senior year, we only played 27 games, and that included our loss in the sectional.
As far as playing sports in the summer, I loved it. Having baseball and softball in the summer allowed us, as a small school, to have good numbers in track and varsity and JV teams in baseball and softball.
On a side note, I was the only boy in my class who played four sports (football, basketball, track, baseball) all four years. However, my school didn't add cross country, in which some of my classmates competed, until my sophomore or junior year.

Do they not get a summer break?

Baseball and softball are summer sports in Iowa. School lets out just like the rest of the country.

The rules must be a lot more lax though on participation since they don't have a GPA or attendance to worry about.

    Small school?

It seems like the larger the school, the fewer multi-sport athletes you get. Especially now with all the club teams and colleges that basically prohibit one of their prized recruits from playing other sports for fear of a possible injury.

Who's looking forward to the cluster(bomb) known as nine-inning American Legion playoff games!?

Today's e-mail, adding to what I posted earlier:

Mother of a player of the softball team I mentioned earlier was quite upset that we didn't give as much coverage to her school the other night. She didn't understand the concept of an "earned run." And she made sure to say twice that the "entire town" is outraged at our coverage, yet hers is the only e-mail we've received.

And she signed it "PROUD MOTHER OF A SOFTBALL PLAYER," but her name was on the e-mail as it came into the inbox. Apparently she doesn't understand the concept of not being anonymous via e-mail.

Eh, typical. People only call/write when they are unhappy about something. Maybe they'll like life better when newspapers go away and all we have is a few blogs and facebook posts to record things.

You should call her and tell her you need to verify her address for the print version.

Is Proud Mom still married to True American, or is she seeing Outraged Taxpayer now?
