Dear fat, POS rep from the state athletic association,

Was I out of place not having a proper, offical media pass to cover your uber-important girls soccer tournament game because I got the freelance call at the last minute? Probably. Has it ever been a problem in any other tournament setting I've been at? No. Were you a pussycat for being a passive-aggressive shit for bemoaning that fact that "I'd want a program?" Yes. I'm sure girls soccer tournament programs go for buckets of diamonds in Podunkville, but in the real world no one gives a fuck. Fuck you, and a pox on whatever family you have.

    Rant over

Not to be "that guy," but it sounds like your beef is with the paper you were stringing for because they didn't get you credentialed. The "fat, POS rep" may have been difficult to deal with, but it sounds like he was doing his job, and he probably could have made things much more difficult for you, too.

He inducted Tony Atlas into the WWE Hall, right? Either him or Rocky Johnson.

Anyone else seeing Letter of Intent signing photos getting more crowded? They used to be the player, high school coach and mom and dad. Now they squeeze in the travel team coach, the former junior high coach, the personal coach, the shop teacher, next-door neighbor Bob and they guy who sells 50/50 tickets at the game. The cutlines are getting bigger than the pic.

Doesn't matter who's in the picture when they send those to us, they're getting cropped out. We just run the kid signing, period.

I check to see if the mom is hot, which is rarely, then trash them.

Yep. :) When the son of one of my former high school classmates signed one a few years ago, I knew I was getting old.

Not to be "that guy" either, but for most of my freelance gigs, it's up to me to contact the school (or whoever is hosting the game I'm covering) and letting somebody know that I'm going to be there and I need to know which gate I need to use to get in with no hassle. The paper for which I mainly freelance uses probably 50 non-staff writers on football weekends. The guy in charge of high school coverage certainly doesn't have the time to contact 50 different schools to let them know a freelancer will be there on Friday.

I called the AD of a local school district to let him know I was covering a playoff basketball game his high school was hosting, and I still had a hard time getting in the game. And print media wasn't allowed to sit courtside. Those tables were reserved for the TV stations, which never showed up. So another reporter and I were at the top of the stands (the only place we could find with electrical outlets) trying to balance our laptops and notebooks and programs. That AD was a jackass.

Agreed. I always contact the hosting school to make sure they know I'm coming and to find out what arrangements can be made. I don't assume someone is going to do it for me. Worked fantastically last Friday for playoff football. I got a great spot in a heated press box and access to power for my laptop, even had rosters waiting for me when I got up there. The host AD was very professional. All it took was one email.
