Precedent? This isn't a courtroom. I can apply one rule to pros and one rule to kids and I promise nothing bad will happen as a result.

Has anyone ever checked with Shee-Shee to see if its what she says she goes by or whether it's just a nickname they use in sports only?

Thirded. If Shee-Shee makes it on the roster, then Shee-Shee it is.

How do you figure out what she REALLY goes by?

Coach calls in and starts calling her Shee-Shee all of the sudden. Even though over the last two years of us covering her, Shee-Shee has never once been mentioned and has never once appeared on any roster from the school. Maybe that's her nickname with the team, maybe her friends call her that, hell maybe everyone in her life calls her Shee-Shee.

If it ain't on the roster, I don't care.

I agree. Iron-clad rules are usually a good idea.

I don't know if I'd say USUALLY... but in this case, yes.

So if a kid's given name is Clyde Jones, but goes by Eddie Jones because Edward is his middle name, you'd call him Clyde?
    That's stupid.

Question 1: What's on the roster?

Question 2: What do his parents call him? I've known a lot of kids who go by a nickname among their peers by their given name to adults. That's not the same as a kid who has gone by a nickname or middle name his whole life.

Then again, no matter what the answer is to Question 2, I'm still gonna refer back to question 1.

If a kid goes by a certain nickname, and EVERYONE knows/calls him/her by that nickname all the time, I have no problem whatsoever using that in print. Doesn't matter if it's Shee-Shee or Bubba or whatever.

I don't see why people are getting into a heated discussion over it, either.

Because shee-shee should get over herself and get a real name.

    Just kidding.

    Mostly.

It's like this to me: grew up with a girl whose name was A_____ A_____ A___. Instead of calling her by her first/middle name, we all called her T.A. (triple A) because that's what she wanted to be called.
