I've gotten releases from actual, getting' paid, sports information directors with the line "Podunk Tech lost to East State College 57 to 74 tonight."

The SIDs at my former school do this. Bugs me to even read their website. The lack of writing skill doesn't help either.

I'd rather get these calls than the ones wanting you to transfer them to circulation so they can cancel the paper.

Been getting a lot of those lately.

I once got a call, on my office line, from the competing newspaper asking if I wanted to subscribe. I told him that he just called the competitor's paper and he said, "Well maybe now you can get the other side of the story." I laughed.

See, if you wouldn't push the deadlines up so darn early, that wouldn't happen. Who cares if the press has to wait? Everyone gets their news from the website anyway, so what's the rush?

We once had this happen to practically our entire newsroom — it was obvious the sales rep was going off a list of phone numbers in numerical order. One person's phone would ring, the person would tell the sales rep he was calling the newsroom of the competitor, then another person's phone would ring, and so on.

Our Little League District has - thanks to travel softball and the such - two teams playing for the Junior Division District title. It's a best of three series.
We'll cover it like its the World Series while our competition ignores it like the plague.

No idea why they don't cover it more. That shit is gold for print sales normally.

"We only cover the Majors. We don't have time to cover anything else and it's not worth it".

To the random dude who just called hawking his work:

Thanks for calling asking if we needed any photos of the water ski/wake boarding event that happened in our backyard. As if we didn't know about it and didn't have a photographer, plus one writer going out there to get results, at the event.

I know I'm turning into the dimwits' advocate here, but you did keep his number, right? Or at least try to sell him some Zija?
