Should I be honored that I pretty much got called a pedophile by java boy? If you knew me, like a few others here, you'd know your accusations are far from the truth. I'm not even sure what I did or said to you to warrant this type of reaction.

And YankeeFan, really? That was so out of line I don't even know where to start.

Anyone else ever run into an AD who thinks it's inappropriate to give out coach's cell phone numbers? I'm dealing with one now and it is less than fun.

I know plenty of people who won't give out home/cell numbers unless it's urgent, especially if the people in question are easily reachable through other means. If you must go through the AD to get cell numbers, maybe ask him or her to see if it's OK with the coaches first? That could clear the air.

  10. In a similar position, I will usually just ask the AD to call the coach when we hang up and have them call me. That way it takes the heat off the AD to give out a personal number, it almost forces the coach to call since his or her boss just asked, and at that point I can usually either get the coach to give me a number or just save the one that shows up on my caller ID.

Yes, when you have the chance go direct to the source to get a personal number...in the meantime, leave your number with a contact or two and be patient.

Schools often give out coaches lists to us, but at times we'll run into some who are uncomfortable with that.

Yes, we've probably all run into this problem. If the coaches and ADs are really inflexible about it, you can go tot he principal and explain the situation. I think a lot of coaches/ADs/principals simply don't understand the schedule we work. We assume they do, but a lot of them just don't. As frustrating as this stuff can be, approach them with the understanding that they just don't know any better.

So you go talk to the principal and you say, listen, most of our work takes place nights and weekends, when we can't reach people in their workplaces. So if a coach/school won't give us home or cell numbers then that team/coach is going to miss out on coverage. We don't want to invade anyone's privacy, and we don't want to ignore teams either. We can't be at every event, so we're asking you to meet us halfway.

After you've done that, you've gone as far as you can. Send the angry calls and emails from parents to the principal or the AD. It's not your fault. Should you have to go through all this red tape with ADs and principals? Of course not. But if you do, you'll have covered your ass and be able to say you made an attempt.
