demise of "s.i." truly saddens me

    I am a consumer. I have consumed SI for 22 years. The change in content with the redesign is disappointing, at best. As a consumer, I actually have a right to say that. I find it interesting that at the exact same time, Newsweek has done a redesign. It looks alarming, but the content is interesting. This week they came at Iran, in depth, from a variety of topics. Interesting. Stuff I haven't read before. How come they can do that, and SI in trying to find a new identity becomes weaker?

    In the pre-electronic days, SI was printed at several places around the country. Rare were typos, and they could appear in one edition of an issue (say, one printed near Los Angeles) but not the others. Multiple printing plants are still used, but this is inexcusable, one more example of how poor the copy editing has become.

    four pages on this dreck? enough. let's turn this around somehow. please: someone come up with what you would do with SI NOW. miss rushin and reilly? fine. who would you put in there? five years ago, i would've said wilbon, hands down. now? not so sure. more takeouts? bonuses? new yorker-type think pieces? the new yorker hasn't made money for years. i'm serious here: let's hear what you'd do -- right now -- to make si the magazine you'd want it to be, top to bottom. who would you hire from newspapers? who would you raid from magazines? would that do the job? or has the landscape changed so drastically that nothing can make a weekly sports magazine interesting, well-written, relevant and profitable? consider this a challenge: make your own SI. tell us why and how. stop scratching yourself and bitching already; this is your chance. tear the place down, okay, but for god's sake tell us what you'd build in its place.

    Here's a freebie: Make sure the writers are identified, the IDs on photos are correct, and the grammar is accurate.
    PS-I miss Rushin and Reilly not at all.

    I don't have the solutions, but I know SI started to lose its way when it tried to be ESPN the Mag. Too much short-attention-span crap in the front, and I think that started to leak into the features area with vapid player profiles.

    So, yeah, I'd say stop trying to be ESPN the Mag. And hire six copy editors, stat.
