I saw Drudge had a link about that earlier today. Now the link is gone and any mention of the eye opening is gone from his web page. I wonder why?

YF, one thing you should work on is thinking about "the media" as a monolithic entity.

It is perfectly consistent for, say, Joe Klein to call for more civil discourse while a random member of the White House press corps asks about "blood libel."

Besides that, it's not the press's job to serve as a safety net for politicians and press secretaries. As much as I hate the stenography aspect of the job, at some point that is part of your job, especially in particular roles: Taking a transcription for the public historical record.

Robert Gibbs may or may not have thoughts on "blood libel." But, considering the buzz about it, the media is not doing their job if they don't at least put that ball in his court to decide.

I've asked about quarterback position battles at times when I knew what the answer was going to be and thought that way too much attention and energy had already been devoted to it. But when the people want those questions asked, you have a certain duty to perform.

  3. To be fair, were there really any non-true believers who were still wavering over that one? I think we had enough evidence to go on a while back.

And the true believers ain't changing their mind no matter what happens.

It was an involuntary physical reaction to stimuli on Sunday.

Last night it was a conscious, spontaneous act. Big difference.

Her surgeon confirmed that yesterday marked the first time she voluntarily opened her eyes and responded to commands.

So I guess some on the right can go hunting around for something else to complain about now.

And if her response was Churchill-like oratory, the true haters wouldn't change their minds either.
Yes, the response wasn't crafted very well. But it took 15 posts and 31 minutes from page one, post one of this thread for someone to try to blame Sarah Palin in some way (that would be you, sportspredictor) for this tragedy and it was one rain of shit on her for several days, despite the fact that the shooter probably couldn't have picked Palin out of a lineup and had no political philosophies anywhere in the same universe as hers. She finally defended herself. I wouldn't have blamed her if she had released a video with four letters to her detractors: STFU.

It was absolutely fair speculation at first.

    Why?

Because the politician who was shot in the head had previously warned the other politician that (in her opinion), the level of rhetoric could lead to someone getting shot.

It turned out to be a coincidence, but until that was known, the speculation was completely warranted.

  11. Also, it didn't take long for Palin's staff to start eliminating certain things from their website.

Because motive is part of the story. And considering her rhetoric and stature, this was as plausible as anything.

And as long as the story was framed as speculation, not established fact from sources, it seems OK to me.
