Even the Politico article that started all of this notes:

    That's what it sounded like.

I'm sure no one would have accused Boehner of trying to steal the spotlight and one-up the president had he showed up in Tucson. No one.

I'm sure someone could have stood in for him. Or it could have been postponed a single day. There's plenty of ways it could have been worked out. Easily.

You don't pay a lot of attention to these things, do you?

The entire House held a conference call on Sunday.

It was agreed that they would only be in session on Wednesday and that the only order of business would be a resolution honoring Giffords and the others killed/injured.

The ASU memorial was planned after this.

The House session could not have been moved back a day. It was the only day they were meeting that week and it was agreed upon by the entire House.

And, as Speaker, Boehner's place was at the House session.

To say anything else, is to either be uninformed or to try to score cheap political points.

This has probably been mentioned. I've had quite a day and don't feel like going back.
I probably shouldn't say this anyway for fear of opening up a can of worms - but: Say what you will about Obama, the man knocked it out with his speech. He's one hell of an orator - I thought Clinton was good but wow.

Comment on that tell me I'm right or full of shit or whatever but KEEP IT TO THAT. We're not discussing his pros/cons as a president.

I need to quit drinking. Next thing I know I may start a "drunk Moddy" thread.

YF, I will not believe nothing could be done to alter the plans in place. So, we're probably best to just agree to disagree. With that, I'm done on this particular point.

Not to further derail this thread but that would be the most awesome thing in the history of the internet.

So, there has to be some other solution, but you don't know what it is?

House members had already made their travel plans based on Wednesday being the only day they would be in session.

If the moved the session to Thursday, no one would have been there.

You can't just criticize his actions unless you're informed of the facts. And once you've been informed of them, it's weak to run away, still proclaiming yourself to be right, but offering no answers.

Bush stayed hermetically sealed, crying into his Jack Daniels, in Air Force 1 and various nuclear bunkers, while Dick Cheney consulted with our alien over lords at Area 51, while Rudy walked the streets of NY and gave America a firm leader.

One of the other members, who are usually appointed Speaker for the day on normal days in the House. Watch the opening of the House on C-SPAN some morning, and you'll see this happen. The Speaker doesn't have to be there to run every single session. It's not really that hard.

Boehner blew it. This was a great chance to make a statement of unity, symbolic as it would have been. Too bad it didn't happen.
