Comparing the Weather Underground, a fringe movement, to the comparatively mainstream Tea Party pols is a ridiculous comparison for righties to make. It's the definition of false equivalency.

There were no Weather Underground politicians voted to Congress. They were never more than a splinter movement. They received media attention back then because they were basically the freak show of the anti-establishment movements of the time.

They never had anything remotely close to the power and influence the Tea Party has now.

Not only that, but whatever relevance they had died 35 years ago, if not sooner, so comparing the rhetoric and actions of what a splinter movement did a generation ago to what supposedly mainstream politicians are doing today is a Stretch Armstrong reach.

A "fringe" movement? A "splinter" movement?

Tell that to Ayers' employers and his buddy in the White House.

Of course. It's a well-known fact. Switch on the teevee, they will tell you.

Just in case this thread is still about Giffords, she is off the ventilator and breathing on her own. Pretty amazing considering a week ago a bullet went through her brain.

Amazing and tremendous news, but I'm afraid a lot of media speculators may be getting carried away with what kind of recovery can be expected, i.e., if she's not on the floor of Congress dancing a jig in a month or two, it's going to be somebody's "fault."

So Ayers isn't a college professor and a friend of Obama? That's your contention?

  8. Phenomenal news. Good point to temper expectations, but it's also nice to see some of the optimism the doctors have expressed, as long as we don't get carried away.

Ayers is one man from a splinter movement ... a movement that existed 40 years ago that has no relevance to today. I had never heard of Ayers, and probably would never have, had he not become a demogouge to be used by the GOP in the '08 campaign.

The Tea Party trades in violent rhetoric and is far, far more mainstream than Ayers ever was or is. They have more power than Ayers could ever dream of, or, that the idiotic Obama haters could ever think he could have had.

So my contention is comparing Ayers to the rhetoric of the Tea Party is ridiculous and disingenuous.

The Tea Party is much broader than the Weathermen were.

The rhetoric and the signs and the implied violence cannot be laid on the entire Tea Party. It's the extreme end even of that.

Then the responsible folks in the Tea Party need to shout their alleged fringe element down.

    But they don't.

Hmm. Change the words "the Tea party" to "Islam" and tell me if you still agree with your previous statement.
