I'd actually be offended by a comparison of the Tea Party to the Weatherman.

The Weatherman were a splinter group of the Students for a Democratic Society. They broke off when the SDS wouldn't go along with their plans for violent revolution.

They wanted to over throw not just our government, but our system of government -- and they were willing to do it by using violence.

They were "inspired" by the murderous thugs of the Cuban revolution.

The tea party is determined to reign in government at the ballot box. They seek not to change our system of government, but to bring it back to something closer to what the founders intended.

Any "violent" rhetoric is a tribute to our revolutionary beginnings, but it's clear that the revolution they hope to inspire will take place at the ballot box.

When a group of tea Party members blows up a Manhattan town house by setting of one of their home made bombs that they intended for a military base, then maybe the comparison will be apt.

Bubbler - label me shocked. You are usually more well informed in your posts.

Highly suggest you bone up on US history from say 1967 - 1970.

For a discussion about today's political atmosphere, the Weathermen are no more relevant than Quantrill's Raiders. I'd be willing to bet that Friday week ago, Congresswoman Gifford's Q-factor was twice that of the Weathermen. That's even WITH the Bill Ayres red herring BS from 2 years ago.

The Weathermen group is a very relevant counterpoint to those that claim there is never been a group like the Tea party.

Also a counterpoint to those that claim that the liberal party is a party of peace.

Tiger Vols - just so I have a reference point how old were you in 1968?

A group that constantly threatens violent insurrection against the government?

1968 - riots outside the Democratic National Convention.

And some say that the Tea Party incites violence against the government.

I was serving in the military when the Weathermen were blowing things up, so I didn't comment on Bubb's statement of ignorance. I despise Ayers, and Dorhn for that matter, beyond the point of rationality. I liked to think at the time that I was defending the right of free speech of those who despised the military; but these two and the rest of the Weathermen were well beyond what freedom of speech allows.

I was surprised to learn that the President--candidate at that time--had had anything at all to do with Ayers. He's a guy who--unless you're ignorant of his history--if you meet him at a party, you should turn away in disgust. I still don't understand it. For me, this guy will always be beyond the pale.
