I remember when I was a kid, toy stores sold T-shirts with gun targets pointed at Khadafi and Khomeini's heads. Violent imagery has been around forever.

They were right next to the bike seats that had Khadafi and Khomeini in full pucker.

There was an area near where I grew up that had — and the exact details may escape me 30 years later — a large Gorilla holding a small Khomeini by a noose. It was on the way to a popular portion of a lake and was a very popular talking point for the locals and tourists alike.

There's actually an organization dedicated to it.

    http://www.patriotguard.org/

They usually show up, park their Harleys near the protesters and rev their engines to drown them out.

I get the sense that if he put a lightbulb in his mouth it most definitely would light up.

Yet the media can't ignore Phelps, because it's better to get him out there and make him look like the kook he is, therefore giving him the stage he wants, rather than make him irrelevant by ignoring him. By covering him, they try to link him to the right, whether it be the Tea Party or Focus on the Family or anyone against gay rights. By covering him, he gets exactly what he wants. Everyone who already thinks he's an idiot gets no benefit by thinking he's an idiot even more. He's an idiot, plain and simple, no matter the political or religious side you are on.

What amazes me is how they get the funds to drive all over the damn country doing this if it is just his "extended" family and friends.

    I laughed. I admit it.

This thread (and subject) probably needed that.

I disagree that the media try to link Phelps to the right. You can argue whether he should be given any publicity at all, but I think it's pretty clear that he's his own kind of kook and that no one claims him.

Now, if you're against gay rights, sure, you might get lumped in with Phelps as a fellow gay basher, I'll give you that.
