When Ronald Reagan was targeted and shot, did anyone imply John Hinckley had connections to left-wing groups?

I don't believe the rhetoric was quite as bad at that time and especially against Reagan. He was pretty well liked all-around, so far as it goes.

That may be the single funniest post I have seen on this esteemed board.

A county sheriff needs to worry more about crime in his county and less about commenting on nationwide political discourse. If he can't help himself, he needs to run for national office such as the House or Senate. I don't need some local yokel holding a county office to tell me or anyone else what we should be debating and what the temperature of that debate should be.

Message to Pima Co. Sheriff: take care of crime within your jurisdiction first.

Attack the messenger, not the message. Typical.

Stats I saw here say different, in regards to total gun violence.

Not attacking the messenger. Just pointing out that his job is to investigate the crime and present the evidence to the state attorney. Going off on a rhetorical rant, it seems to me, might actually taint potential jury pools. He needs to STFU and solve the crime.

Umm, he did solve the crime.
    Shooter is in custody.

What happened in Tuscon is clearly a matter of local context. Sheriff, who probably has better working knowledge of the local nutjobs, is probably sick and tired of the lunatic fringe giving him headaches.

Then a local nut, inspired by who knows what, goes off and shoots a popular local congresswoman in the head and then kills a federal judge, a little girl and three more people.

It was a rant, but one the sheriff was entitled to. This whole notion that he shouldn't have said anything is just stupid. If what he said agreed with your political beliefs, you wouldn't be complaining now.

That site is sourcing the same link I had but using the totals instead of the rate, which isn't an accurate reflection of the level of violence. It's more accurate to look at the rate of the crime instead of total numbers. It makes sense that, based on differences in population, NJ would have more. But adjust for population, and the rate is much different.

Just a thought, but put NJ on the Mexican border and see what happens to the numbers.

Point was that the rate in New Jersey, with strict gun laws, is much less than the rate in Arizona, with much less strict gun laws. I'm not going to threadjack this with a debate on whether the Mexican border is a major cause in the difference.

I would rather the sheriff's perspective than a study of the guy's ideology. Jared Loughner's political delusions are no more interesting than anyone else's.

I'm betting this costs the sheriff in his next re-election bid.
