The Cup nonsense isn't why he left, but since the story said his departure was planned before the season ended proves why he was comfortable enough to take part in the celebration and post it gloriously. I also love that the story used a big photo of it right at the top.

Will be interesting to see who the new hire is at that rate because it's not cheap to live here. Same salary range for when they had the Broncos opening a couple of months ago.

I can’t believe the top end of that is roughly 65 per.

Given the time and stress of these major beats, even at a declining publication like the Denver Post, I don't know why anyone would do that. It has to be a means to an end or a stepping stone or something to agree to do that for that money. I don't make a whole lot less on some contract media work I do that takes a whole lot less time and isn't really stressful at all.

It's the Post. Owned by a hedge fund. Not surprised one bit.

I wouldn’t have even thought that to be the starting wage.

If the Broncos job was advertised for the same salary as the Broncos job then the Post is using union scale. Especially since the job is advertised with an hourly pay. I would think management could always negotiate a contract above scale if they so choose. But I don't think that would be something they would want made public.

I would think that the Post could find some sportswriter working in a smaller market willing to take that salary for the chance to cover a professional sports beat.

I think he's only been out of college a year or two, and a little surprised he wouldn't be the guy for the Post-Dispatch's Blues beat. He's from St. Louis, interned at the P-D while at Mizzou, and his parents work/worked at the P-D (Dad still there, Mom moved on, I believe).

But seems like a very solid hire for the Denver paper.

Speaking of the former Broncos beat writer, here's a write-up on him bolting to Buffalo.

I try hard not to be The Old Man Yelling at Clouds because I know times change, the industry has changed, all that stuff. /waveshandswildly/

But it still boggles my mind that a 26ish-year-old is a beat writer for a professional or major college team. I know many are gifted with talent to write, produce videos and other content, and interact with the public, though. Good luck to him.

I worked for two different major metros in the ‘90s (like, 30 years ago, wow). Both had several beat writers in their 20s and early 30s, whose output ranged from just fine to fabulous. Age is not a barrier to skill in this work, whether young or seasoned.
