    Awesome take.
EDIT: just wanted to add this @SixToe: Been a reader since my paternal grandmother taught me to love it as a child. In the last 20 years or so, I've been ... yeah, it's cliche ... a voracious reader. The final two grafs you wrote probably explain why.

I try to avoid watching games with people in general, and especially with people who are "big fans" but have a limited understanding of sports. Generally, they don't know that they're understanding is limited, which results them asking questions about why "everyone hates my team!" and "the refs are always screwing us!"

Sometimes, I just kinda nod along, give them a sentence or two, and leave it at that. Others, I'll tell them that the announcers and officials are trying to do the best job they can, leave the stadium unscathed and get home to their families. They seldom understand until I explain that I've been both a traveling pxp guy and officiated sports. If they then come back with something along the lines of, "Well, it's different in the pros, because Goodell/Bettman/Silver/Manfred can control the outcome!" I finish my beer and make an Irish exit.

As my high school coach used to say, "Never argue with an idiot, because an idiot never knows when they've lost the argument."
