Cigar thing is weird to me, all school facilities here are tobacco free by law and lighting up prob wooda been grounds for forfeit in the eyes of some of the state athletic association.

Many years ago one of our competitors got a photo of some athletes smoking cigars at graduation, with a playoff game a few days later. AD had to suspend them. Everybody mad at him but its zero tolerance by state rule

  2. I stepped on the logo once. I was probably 25 years old, just filling in at a press conference while our beat writer was on vacation.

The team’s PR guy, in the nicest way possible, nudged me and raised his eyebrows, gesturing to get off the logo. I did move. But I was also thinking, “Really, dude?”

Years later, I am thankful for that experience. The PR guy handled it well, I didn’t make a fool of myself, and I learned something that I remember to this day.

  3. IMO, that is the absolute batshit nonsense kind of story and news cycle that (coupled with other factors, namely salary) drives young people away from this career path.

I know Gabriel was the one who handed him the cup, but I would 100% refuse. That guy did nothing to help that team win. What an ass clown.

i dont think the competitor’s news side was aware of the rule….it wasn’t published as “athletes light up” but as “seniors having fun.”

AD felt he had no choice as if he let them play the opponent could’ve forced a forfeit afterwards

I covered a couple dozen Rose Bowls and never got offered a golf bag. But it being in my city, I never took a media bus or stayed in a media hotel.
One year the Rose Bowl gifted the writers binoculars. I found out a couple of years later when a co-worker came in and I saw some binoculars in his bag with my name on them. They had been sent to the office. The SE stole mine and gave it to the other guy. Best thing I got from the Rose Bowl was a nice garment bag with logos, but not my name. Still have it. This stuff was 30-40 years ago.

I very much respect Vic Lombardi. He is one of the best media personalities in Denver. He is also an employee of the Avalanche and Nuggets.
