You would seem to be the one skirting the issue here.

I guess we need to change the saying: You have lies, damn lies, and designer statistics.

Still 0 out of 95 percent. Still waiting for the rest ...

I don't know. You may even be right. That doesn't make you any less an asshole.

What you fail to consider is that many of us, as designers, are EXPECTED to raise the bar, to try to make our pages better. You can dislike "design at the expense of copyediting" all you want. But there are many people who don't have "copy editor" in their title. They are page designers. And for you to thumb your nose at everything they do is disingenious at best ... at worst, I don't quite have the word for it.

Again, if you don't design, please, post a story or two you've done. We'll be happy to tell you just how talented you are.

It ain't that hard to find writing samples or things to criticize in them. Knock yourself out.

And there are many designers who DO have "copy editor" in their titles, and they are not doing that part of the job. That, to me, is sufficient reason for them to be fired and replaced with people who will do that part of the job. Editors won't do it, though; they're too gutless.

I don't know where that paper comes from, but I stand by my assertion that if you ask 100 readers of that sports section how they feel about that package, 95 will say they like it based solely on its presentation.

So, buddy, what exactly do you do at your paper?

That's as gutless a generalization as any which have been put out there.

I design AND I copy-edit. And I consider both to be vital, and spend a lot of time on both.

If your people don't, that's your problem.

You really need to allow yourself the possibility of not knowing everything.

Until he can tell us what his title is, or show us an example of his genius, I think anything of the criticial nature he has to spout should be taken with less than a grain of salt.

Wow. So because you do it, they all do?

Not only are many of them NOT doing it, they fall back on the excuse of not being editors when they mess up. I've heard them do it. I've seem them write it.

I'll be glad to come back later with examples of page designers making excuses for not doing the editing portion of their jobs. You know, that pesky thing that's in their job description.

    That's funny.

There's a couple of things here: either he's a disgruntled copy editor who wants more power and feels unappreciated because designers get so much glory, or, he's a guy who hasn't gotten laid in a very long time and rages with hate against anything that goes against his grain. Maybe both.

Dye, I guess I should add that if you are a copy editor and are good at it, that's great, because there aren't enough qualified ones around.

I just have a sense that you're a copy editor who works his ass off yet doesn't get any recognition. Because really, who the hell talks up little ol' copy editors, when the designers drop a page full of flash and pizzazz into readers' laps every day?

A copy editor is tantamount to the utility player who sits on the bench while a stadium packed with 50,000 fans scream like mad when the slugger hits a 3-run home run (or in keeping with the metaphor, the designer who designs a killer page).
