Is your publisher going to buy new fonts?

If so, you might want to go with the Franklins or Bureau Grotesque.

If not, there are ways to make Helvetica work better. Tweak your style sheets to tighten, bold, stretch.

I go primarily with Impact and Times (either capped and bold or regular but italicized). We have very few with which to work, and most of them suck donkey balls.

Same here, the four primary fonts that I use are Helvetica, Times, Impact and Helvetica Compressed

We primarily use Berkley and Futura, they look alright, but are mighty blockey.

Here's a daily prep basketball preview at a past stop (we covered just two schools; that's the reason for the length).

Sorry for the poor quality (it's a JPEG of a copy ::)). I didn't know how to post pages at the time.

nick, you're definitely on the right track with that. Only thing I'd adjust is the amount of copy on the analysis. Quicker hit.

As for our fonts, we use the Poynter family and Benton (condensed fonts only).

I would also lose the "#32" from the player ID in the photo.

His number is evident in the photo. And if it isn't, it's still listed in the roster.

Tell your publisher that Helvetica is a sign of laziness.

I like Caslon, Serif's good, I like Franklin Gothic as a hammerhed. Agree with Cadet on Helvetica.

Well, our publisher is a very good sign of laziness, as is...

I work for a weekly paper that just covers three highschools, and if you've ever worked for a weekly, well, this one in particular, no matter how bad the team loses, you have to highlight the positives, not the negatives.

Nice try at jazzing up a breakout box. But the "P" makes it hard to read part of the lineups, and the bottom type is too small, and too tight against the cutout.

One thing I'd add to that info box is some individual player stats. You've got some room past their year in school to add how many points per game each player is averaging.
