Good question, SC. I sure didn't know what it was when we started it.

In cross-column alignment, your specs are set up so a line of copy in Column 1 is vertically even with a line of copy in Column 2, etc. There is no "leading out" of stories. If you come up a few lines short, you usually recrop the art to create a tight fit. Or some might create a paragraph break or two to make the story fill out.

    Gotcha. Thanks for the explanation.

Ah, gotcha. Sorry, must have missed that since I was a bit of a late-comer to the thread.

I also agree, dooley, about the rail in this case ... it's clearly padded out ... one of the reasons I like the Baltimore version, no need to pad, make it as long as it needs to be. (And I promise, I'll stop talking about the Baltimore 'L' now. :))

Since we haven't had a new page in a day or so, I'll throw this one out.

The CP hed and the Cavs pic are clashing for prominence. And did anybody consider a computer theme, like maybe a cartoon home page, for the centerpiece instead of this ordinary approach? And the bottom of that page is deadly.

The centerpiece, in itself, is a nice piece of work. And the page totally breaks down from there. It feels to me like a page where a desk editor is handed a 3x17 centerpiece from the graphics department and told, "make it work."

No biggie. Didn't mean to come off as an asshole in my explanation. Your idea with the box was on the money.

I have a feeling I'm going to be in the minority, but I have no problem with the Cleveland page. I think it's well done.

That's what I thought when I first saw the page. Put a computer monitor screen on there.

I almost think the computer monitor theme is getting played out -- much like the boxing promo fronts. Everybody that ever does a story on something involving the internet works a computer screen in there. I think this one was a much cleaner look than trying to go over the top.

SC, I think that package had too many gadgets and changeups. I'm not sure whether I like the main hedline (words are fine, but I'm not sure if I like the stacking approach.)

That's a lot of grey in that package.
