I'd like to say "If you can't say something nice TO EACH OTHER, don't say anything at all."

Feel free to rip on pages. :) Constructively, of course.

Hold on. I at no point typed a word that was derogatory toward Chris Rukan. Don't go blaming me; I critiqued on point.

Here's the Tulsa World's hoops preview. A broadsheet turned sideways with a colorful photo.

I really dig that photo ... the all blue feel punctuated by the orange of the rim. it just has a nice look to it.

I think the hed woulda looked better on one line though ... would have given the page a bit more balance, and they wouldn't have needed to bump it into the net.

I don't know, Chris. I like the block of text, leaving the rest of the photo alone, and having it run behind the net partially gives it a feeling of depth.

I think I like it the way it is.

I like it better on two lines, too, for the same reasons IJAG said. The picture was great. I even like the rail. I would have made the subheadline a little bit bigger next to Starting Over, but that's just a minor thing.

On the arguing over the Plain Dealer: I think when you offer an opinion (at least I tend to do this) it can sound like you're saying your opinion is right. Everybody's got an opinion. I think Chris and Dooley were arguing on the point, which is ideal for this thread. I'm glad it didn't spin out of control. It was just two peeps with differing opinions. It's all good.

On Carrie McCann: I don't have time to read all the threads to find out what bet you lost, but it sure better have been a good one.

    Carry on all.

this thread is about design, people, not me... let's get the focus back to where it belongs...

    OK. About the page:

I agree with what Chris said about the headline, but I also like the structure it has with the dek hed filling in the space between the two lines of headline. I also like the starkness of the black on either side.

Though, if I could have found a way to avoid having to run the net over the type, I would have done that.

My favorite part? The rail of teasers to the stuff in the section. It's clean and simple and doesn't take anything away from the photo.

What do y'all think about the outline type? I'm not a fan ... but it could just be me that feels that way ...

I'm not a fan in most cases, but I think on a black background, with a color that bright, it's almost necessary to keep it from bleeding into the background. Makes it pop just a bit more.

I love the rail as well.

    Thanks, S.C.

And that blue hitting off the seats is very impactful. Nicely done.
