As you might have guessed, I just love that the "big four" sports now have complete head-shot availability online.

Unless you're the poor schmuck who needs a shot of Samkon Gado. Or the also missing Curtis Martin, unfortunately.
Still, it is pretty awesome, especially with the baseball shots that are almost full-body.

A new one. The Arizona Republic's special section cover from their Nextel Cup race this weekend:

I really like it, but wonder if the checkerboard border might be a little on the thick side.
Then again, it could just be me.

    Thoughts?

agreed. two checks thick isn't enough to give impression of checkered flag... gotta have three.... but the border is too much... it detracts from the effectiveness of the cars... which i might have considered blowing up to draw more attention to the fact that it's a gimmick.... and if you were gonna be wed to the checker thing cuz it's the race... then consider using a checker motif as the finish line itself... or even the bottom half of the page (with the copy block cut in, of course....)

If they didn't want a big hed at the top, they should have done away with the copy up there altogether. It gets lost too easily.

As far as the checker border, I think you need something around the edge of the page, since there is so much white space. You kinda need something to mark the page borders.

At the other end of the white space spectrum ...

I like the leaderboard being on there, though I think there are too many players on it and it could be designed better.

There's too much going on on the page. I hate the cutout of Tiger. I also would prefer the smaller pic with the main story be on the other side of the story, since he'd be facing into it then. The justification is bad on the quote of the day, which makes for too much space on the third line. Spacing isn't consistent, either. There's no space between elements in the main package, and then there's a huge gap between the column hed and the body, and the spacing doesn't look even between the rule by the rail doesn't look centered between the rail and the rest of the page.

That was a lot more negative than I wanted it to be. It's not a bad page. There are some good fundamentals to it. But it needs serious tweaking.

Golf leaderboards -- when worth the space -- are great graphic opportunities which should be limited only by the quality or lack of color available.

The rail seems too wide, which leads to the art in it clashing with the main art, which is a pretty basic shot. I agree there are too many names on the leaderboard, and there was certainly an opening for alternating color screens in it.

Just to go back to the Republic page...is it splitting hairs to say that Mark Martin has not run that paint scheme this year? He's been Viagra-sponsored for the entire season, not, technically, Pfizer-sponsored.

Plus, the whole thing seems too simplistic for me. Not that I'm some creative genius, but it seems there could have been a better way to tell the story besides five die-cast cars and a gray line.

I agree with that others have mentioned, but the thing that stands out to me most is that there's a column on Hank Kuehne with a photo of Mike Weir beside it. Surely they had a shot of Kuehne they could have used there.
