Here's a jump page, albeit with just one jump on it.

The only tee tiny possible complaint I could come up with is that the shadow on the right side of the roster box kind of makes the last column of jump text look like a seperate sidebar. And I doubt it even does that when you look at the actual page.

Nice package, except the main hed font just seems too thin. Thin doesn't usually serve sans serif well, at least in sports.

    Agreed on the head font.

I kinda like the main photo here. I don't know if that's great main art for the front centerpiece, but on the jump page, it works pretty good.

me, too. Send that box all the way to the right and air it out to take up the whole column.

Speaking of shadows on the right sides of boxes, I offer this page from the SF Examiner.

It's an inside page, and to my eyes...there are just too many boxes. I don't think the stuff on the right side needs to be set off. The stuff on the left, I'm OK with. The box score, no. The next game? I'd prefer no.

I agree, and think it would get a much better treatment with rails down each side. The stuff which ISN'T boxed on the right is support material, too.

I agree on the boxes. Way too much there.

But the first thing I saw was the graphic in the middle of the story breaking up the copy. Lose the pull quote, grab another graph or two of info and work that graphic in the second column at the top.

Not only is it too many boxes, but the boxes themselves could be toned down. Lose the shadow.

If you're going to use a box, shouldn't you include Roll Call, Coach's Corner, etc, INSIDE the box

I'm with you. Those make the pages look darker than it maybe should be. On a positive note, at least they found a way to get Jake Plummer's porn-star mustache mug on the page.

Not as fancy as most...but I like it.

There's some grey, but balanced (with text and breakouts). Is there a general rule of thumb (I'm fairly new at this...sorry) -- be it too much or too little -- about grey space?

The Savannah Morning News always has a very well-designed sports section. This is no different.

I would have made the lead headline on the far right, "Dekle energizes Statesboro 'D.'" That way there wouldn't be so much white space on the end of two of the deks of the headline.

I don't like the pull-out box breaking up the copy on the bottom, but I can see it was done that way because it would have bumped the teaser on the bottom right. I might have taken the pull-out box and broken it up over two columns to avoid doing that, but that's just me.

I like pull-out boxes, because they give you quick-hit information, but they may have overdone it with this page. But I'm not completely sold that they did.
