SCEditor hit my points on the head. That breakout box in the bottom story is KILLING me. It should have been moved to the far left, and the inane basketball cutout needs to go.

I also wouldn't mind the Statesboro hed being just a bit larger. It is the top hed on the page. Also not crazy on the cutouts just floating up in the flag. I'd like the copy around them, or near them, rather than separated by the rule.

But overall, it's not bad. I like the teaser in the bottom right.

I think I don't like it more than you don't like it, SC. ;)

I can't stand it when you have a complete break of copy flow like that lower-left story. The answer? Pull-out box fills the FIRST column, start copy in the second.

Complete breaks can be effective in centerpieces or occasionally in secondary pieces.

But certainly not in this instance.

Their flag area has far too much white space and far too much type all at once, which may be an achievement of some kind. But the rest of the page is pretty decent. I really like the centerpiece concept of making Peterson stand out, and the refer at the bottom right is well done, also, which make the basketball gimmick superfluous. I'm thinking lots of folks would put the schedules inside and refered to them, but I think they work fine out front.

That was my first thought. The Mannings look so alone up there. And aside from the bottom story's box as others have pointed out, I liked the page.

I love the doubletruck and the Chris Bosh page. The cover is a different story. There's far too much going on the front.

Since when is a sports section discussing DNA strands ???

But seriously, this double-truck tries to do too much. The blue bars with the art are very nicely done, but I'd have made them bigger and anchored them to something. And instead of all those distracting dots, I would have just put the numbers comparisons in an attractive chart.

Putting the ruler at the end of the stick was clever, but somehow, the blade should have been smaller so that it looked proportionately more like an NHL stick.

The dots are actually hockey pucks.

Nooo! Really? Not really relevant to my point, tho.

Dooley, that seems like it is relevant to your point.

The distracting dots actually convey information that is the essence of the story (as talked about in the deck). I agree with you that the dots could be done smaller and still convey the same information, which would allow you to get the center "goals per game" portion larger. I'm not sure what you meant by attractive chart, but I think all the charts should be on the same plane (from left to right, for example), so that you can see the relationship better of what has increased or decreased dramatically this season.

Last time I checked, you couldn't get a die cast car with "Viagra" on it -- only "Pfizer" ... they must be thinking of the children.

No, my point is that the dots/pucks/whatever didn't work. The most attractive part of the package was not allowed to be the focus. And yes, they looked liked DNA strands, sorry. I would have presented the comparison information differently so that the very-well-done bar chart could have been very well done in a more dominant way.
