It's much the same way with Poynter, with its serif and sans-serif options. Lots of possibilities there.

    I like Poynter, Shottie.

We use it for body type and it's very forgiving.

If you're a designer and you really want to fly, you spot that red flag very early on. If you don't, you're pretty much fucked.

These decisions and a blatant lack of mercy and knowledge of the visual arts have been detrimental to many a career. Creative people have no business working for editors with a ham-fisted understanding of design.

Ooooo, man, LJB ... you sure have pigeon-holed designers into a precarious spot there.

Leaves them with about seven newspapers at which to work. ;D

shot, it is truly a blessing to work for a "designer's editor," if there is such a thing anymore. I have worked for a publisher who took an unusually strong interest in the visual end of the product, which also was a nice thing.

I'm lucky enough to work for an editor, ME and SE who are all former designers.

Of course, then (not to keep the threadjack going, but it's worth consideration) ... at what point do you run the danger of design at the expense of the written word?

There IS a fine line sometimes.

obviously, some things have to be taken into consideration.

such as art, or the availability of it. I don't know how many times I have had a CP story fall through cause we had shit for art, if any at all.

I try, or at least I think I try, to keep the dressing up of stories limited to those that need it. otherwise, it's straight design for me.

maybe I don't have the talent to really push the envelope, but I think I can spot the opportunities to do the fancier stuff.

of course, it took me awhile to figure out how to do cutouts. much less breakouts and the such.

I find the "framing" of the main photo to be really unnecessary. And the "pennant" in the upper right reefer looks small-time.

The side rail looks fine, though.

I don't like the frame on the main photo, either, and the background should've been knocked off the helmets. Also, the words on the main picture are hard to read. Migh have been better solid black or white, but outline definitely isn't working.

Having to do this on about every cover these days, I can vouch for the fact that it's awfully difficult to find a shade that truly works for type on a picture. Even being able to place it where you want, you wind up with dark-on-dark on white-on-white in some area. In many cases, outline or shadow is the only thing that can save it.
