Then, if you can, shouldn't the key be to find the right photo. This wasn't a great photo, and it was for an advance. Surely a better pic could've been found that would've made the type easier to read.

Well, there's the balance between getting the right photo, and getting the right photo which allows you to present copy well. There are many times when one particular photo is clearly the best for showing what you want to bring across.

But you're quite right, G. For this situation, there had to be many options. And that should have come into consideration.

Yes, it is. Unashamedly. We've got one little corner here which has stayed professional and focused. Just want to try to keep it that way.

I know that sounds like I'm speaking just for myself, but I know for a fact that many of the other frequent posters in here feel the same way.

I still don't understand what the powers-who-be at the Sentinel were thinking when they approved the redesign with the floating nameplate on the inside sections.

And I agree with the others who question the centerpiece choice. There were other options -- Magic, Cowboys-Broncos, Florida-State-Florida -- rather than this "selfcenterpiece." I could see this as an inside page centerpiece, but there's no logical reason to do it this way.

    From the Maui News:

Designer's comments (from NPD.com): This really was a great tournament this year, which helped justify our over-the top coverage -- which we did shorthanded with a four-person staff... anyone want to work in Maui? Let us know. Seriously.

If you're in Maui and you DON'T go over the top on the final day of this, you're out of your mind. It's their event of the year, that and the PGA stop.

Well handled, I think. Might have liked to get some photo balance at the bottom of the page.

    Agreed, Shottie.

I also think the main photo leaves a bit to be desired, but you gotta go with what you have.

I really like the score box at the top of the page because I think it gives the whole front a nice package look.

The only criticism I have is the refers at the bottom. I think they could have been shortened up a few lines. And maybe have a different type treatment than the sidesaddle "On the Inside Today" hed. Or just do away with it all together. That really sticks out to me.

    * Lose the "On The Inside Today" box altogether. Either expand the refers or put in an index.
    * The score breakouts with the logos seem to take up an excessive amount of real estate. I'll grant that they may not get used every day.
    * (Warning, dipping toe into news judgement waters) Shouldn't there be some sort of feature or column to give an overall perspective of the event? And shouldn't Chaminade get some sort of teaser art?
    * LOVE the page topper. Overall, solid effort from a paper with a staff size I can finally relate to.

We joked around here about applying for the maui position.

I'm amazed that more people haven't jumped at the opportunity. hell, how many times do you get the chance to move there?

if i didn't have a mortgage and a wife, I'd be all over that job.

    that said, solid page.

Very brief threadjack, because I know this is one of our cool professional threads.

2much, in an extremely weird coincidence, I JUST five minutes ago bought the Thelonius Monk/John Coltrane album in your signature for my brother for Christmas on Amazon.

Hate pit shots, but sometimes that's all you have. Other than that, nice looking page.
