That doesn't bug me as much as the line underneath it.

I hate that. Then again, it's probably because our style includes those things too.

I had a huge package this week (McMahon's HI-YO!), but I had one of those gray horizontal lines separating bottom of the package story and the final bottom-third of the page. I'm sort of torn whether or not I should have used it or not. Sometimes designers have no choice -- editors demand some type of separation between packages or stories.

I use panels often. I love it, but you need the art to pull it off. I liked this page.

i think the package is good (huh huh -- you said package)

and i'm sure it's style, but couldn't the header above the aj hawk teaser go under the photo to avoid six columns of bumping heads

and, if it's about a typical day of aj hawk, shouldn't we have something other than a typical game action photo to promo that?

Only thing which bothered me is what bothers hoops here.

I don't care if bumping heads are OK these days. If you have them ... there's a better way to handle it.

    But an outstanding top centerpiece.

I used to be in this camp but have since changed my mind. Try to avoid? Yes. But never say never.

I agree that they can always be avoided . . . but IMO the cure (avoiding the bump) can sometimes be worse than the disease (bumping). This is especially true if the heads are of differing weights (big/small or bold/light) and if one of them is centered above a feature package.

With big football games coming up (high school state title games, bowl games, NFL playoffs), here's an idea for what to do with those pesky stat packages. From the Press Enterprise:

I will say this - the happiest day of my life was when my paper decided to stop running drive charts.

    My initial response is "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!!!!!!!!!"

Who in the general public really reads that stuff, anyway?

I like the rail on the left side of the page. I think it's a nice way to display the summary for a big game.

As for the play-by-play, I'm lucky we don't run that stuff (or drive charts) 2muchcoffeeman. But some papers do. The photos help break up the monotony of it a bit.

    Rail good. All else? Gag.

    Seems like it's overkill.

This page is garbage? What a gutless piece of shit thing to say. If you have constructive criticism to add, fine, go ahead. Otherwise if you are going to take cheapshots at other designers' work, the least you can do is have the balls to post your name and whatever work (design, write, edit) that you do.

BTW, this thread is nice and all, but I don't recall the designers who post their pages on NPD asking Carrie to take them over here and get brutalized. At least on NPD you have people using real names giving feedback.

If someone can point out how this is any different than the douche taking a shot at the Dallas SE, I'd be curious.

And on the 53rd page, pax sj dissolves.

Damn you polo DyePack. You couldn't leave one thread unpolluted?

    vj,

if you read this thread, you'll find much of it constructive criticism... it's a great thread which has people talking about design. much of it is very supportive.

i'm not sure if you know this, but these are newspapers, they're published all over the place and people can pick them up for upwards of 50 cents. if you don't want something talked about, don't publish it.

seriously, there are a lot of petty threads around here, for the most part this one isn't.

sit back, read and say something nice. it's done a lot on this thread -- much more than any other place on this site
