    Here ya go:

    SENATORS 6, PANTHERS 3
    Way too much to handle
Ottawa outshot Florida 17-5 in the second period as the Senators ended the Panthers' two-game winning streak.
    BY GEORGE RICHARDS

With Ottawa firing at will in the second period Monday, Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo looked like a target in the middle of a shooting gallery.

On the Senators' 12th shot of the period, they finally broke through.

Ottawa's Brandon Bochenski scored with more than 12 minutes left in the second to lead the Eastern Conference leading Senators to a 6-3 victory against the Panthers at BankAtlantic Center. Bochenski, called up from the minors last week, added two more for his first career hat trick.

''They have depth, they have speed and on a night like tonight, they have a guy who they just called up that scores three goals against you,'' said Panthers coach Jacques Martin, now 0-2 against his former team. ``They're the top team in the National Hockey League.''

In the second, Ottawa took 12 shots at Luongo before the Panthers took their first crack at Dominik Hasek. And on that shot, Ottawa grabbed a lead it would not relinquish, as Florida's two-game winning streak came to a halt. The Panthers have yet to win three straight this season.

''They were taking it to us there in the second,'' said Luongo, pulled for Jamie McLennan after the sixth goal. ``I tried to hold down the fort for a little, but a couple went in after that.''

When asked if Luongo expected Ottawa's offensive leader to be the little-known Bochenski, Luongo said, ``I've never heard of this guy before, but obviously I'll know who he is from now on.''

The Panthers held the lead twice in the opening period, jumping to a 1-0 lead as Niklas Hagman celebrated his birthday with his second goal of the season 2:35 in. The Senators tied it five minutes later, but Mike Van Ryn gave Florida its second lead after taking the faceoff winner from Jozef Stumpel and firing from just inside the blue line.

Florida didn't have much time to celebrate, as Ottawa scored nine seconds later when Vaclav Varada fired a shot toward the net. The puck deflected off of Van Ryn's skate and trickled past Luongo to make it 2-2.

''It was just one of those plays,'' said Van Ryn, who has had two other goals bounce off him this year. ``I think we have to find a way to bounce back.''

Added Martin: ``You work hard for your goals, and you can't afford to give them any freebies. But that's what they got.''

Ottawa bombarded the Panthers in the second. After taking the first 11 shots of the period -- including three point-blank shots in rapid succession -- Bochenski stole the puck from Eric Cairns at center ice, broke free and scored on Luongo.

The Senators, the highest-scoring team in the league, outshot Florida 17-5 in the second, and took a two-goal lead when Daniel Alfredsson's shot from 35 feet went in. Bochenski scored twice in the third to make it a 6-2 rout, and by the time Joe Nieuwendyk scored to make it 6-3, Luongo had been on the bench for more than seven minutes.

''We shot ourselves in the leg with all our penalties,'' Hagman said. ``It's a tough loss.''

    • Defenseman Sean Hill's injured groin might keep him from making the team's three-game road trip, so the team has put Alexander Karpovtsev on re-entry waivers in case he is needed.

Serge Payer (ribs) was placed on the injured list retroactive to Nov. 28. Newcomer Steve Montador was a healthy scratch for the second time since joining the Panthers on Friday.

    • The Panthers celebrated Olli Jokinen's 27th birthday with a shaving cream pie to the forehead, courtesy of teammate Juraj Kolnik. Hagman (26) and Senators coach Bryan Murray (63) also celebrated birthdays Monday.

    • Don Van Massenhoven, the referee hit by a puck during a Panthers game Nov. 23, was one of four NHL officials selected to work the upcoming Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Typical lazy, "the page is done; it's great" response. My headline forthcoming ...

    Re: Design thread *Updated 12/13*

My first impulse is: "Shot surplus leads to net loss." If surplus won't fit, get a shorter word, like glut or rush. I'm sure there are others, too. Then rewrite the subhed to change "outshot" to avoid repetition.

Cue up the reasons for why we can't do this in 5, 4, 3 ...

I would say that 'net loss' is a little cliche

Net loss?!? Gross, and incredibly cliched. Nothing wrong with the original head, esp. considering there was a lead in under it. You're fighting a losing battle on this one, DP.

That hed wouldn't fit in those specs.

And not to start a fight (only because DyePack's offerings have become Wordhawkish and annoying), but to DyePack -- by your logic how can you say a hed should be rejected and rewritten if you haven't read the story?

"Way too much to handle" is plenty cliche.

Since you seem to be the only one who thinks it's terrible, I think that might just be why it wasn't rewritten. Nobody saw anything wrong with it. ::)

    Re: Design thread *Updated 12/13*

Then you guys need to get a clue. "Way too much to handle" is pretty awful for a number of reasons.

Again, it's the head-up-the-ass, lazy, "it's good enough" approach. And we wonder why fewer people get the newspaper ...

You should change the name of the thread to "Design Buttkissing" or something like that.

i like the way dyepack can't offer anything constructive, but he has plenty of excuses.
first, he couldn't read the story.
then he said it's hard writing headlines without the specs.
now, he's prolly complaining because his brain doesn't work right (the malfunction obvious to all of us).

back to the page, tho. i likes. a lot. yeah, the button logo things may be a bit much, but the total package is good stuff nonetheless.

    Re: Design thread *Updated 12/13*

And the ultrastupid responses just keep on coming.

Obviously being able to read a story would aid the headline process. And having the specs is usually a necessity, too.

If you want to write those things off as excuses, then it probably shows why you think the original headline didn't suck. Which it does. The editor should have changed it.

I gave you a suggestion, knowing it would be shot down immediately with the head-up-the-ass, lazy responses. Don't say there was nothing constructive offered.
