    awesome!
you didn't refute your brain was broken.
folks, i think we finally found some truth here.

here's some more truth: your headline sucked. and you weren't even on deadline.

but keep going, your obvious frustration with your own lack of talent is amusing to us all.

I not crazy about that hed either but the main discussion here is the design.
There are a couple of  little tings that bother me about an otherwise very good looking page.
Wrapping a few lines of type under the info box on the Heat story just drives me crazy as do the long reading drop heds---which is a popular style that I just don't like.
Could easily has used small Heat-Clippers art to break the hed bump on the bottom and not have 3 lines turning under the info box.

And, folks, please, stop arguing with DyePack. Just ignore him. This has been a great thread with good give and take and real discussion about our business. Don't let one person's negativity screw it up and get it locked (as it was for a shot time).

Let me throw this out there, DyePer...

I don't know the exact situation, but let's say this story was live. Deadline is 10:30 p.m. Game ends at 10, filed by 10:15, edited and sloted by 10:25. Given to the designer to write the headline with 5 minutes left, not only to come up with the hed, but to position the graphics, hed, text and info boxes, get the jump down and send the page.

How long did it take you to just read the story and write the headline? I'm guessing at least 5. By then, you're late for deadline and your ass is getting chewed the next day.

Creative head? no. Works for the page, tells the story and keeps the paper on time? Possibly.

There are a lot of factors that go into something like this. It's hard to be witty and quick, especially in such a tight space.

Is that paid thing? Yucky. Ads are bad enough, but sponsored editorial content . . .

Well, if there has to be an ad or a sponsor on the front page, I suppose the index and scores is the best place for it.

otherwise, a pretty decent looking page but a little blah in some ways.

Not sure if it's an ad or just gaudy looking index. Either way it looks pretty bad/

What paper is that? Boy that looks like a sponsored ad.

I know we all thumb our noses at those, but they are going to become more and more common. If advertisers are willing to pay a premium for something sponsored like those or an ad that actually interacts or infringes on the rest of the page (we've already run a few of those in Dallas and especially in our tab product "Quick". You may not like it (I know I don't), but it's coming...

Dyepack, I could care less whether you praise or criticize the stuff on this thread, and I can't imagine anyone else would feel differently. It's all lead so far to great discussion.

It's just that you're so caustic about it. Even if you invented newspaper design, and taught each of us everything we knew, it wouldn't be justified or appropriate.

I don't want a lovefest. I just want something more civil than many other portions of this site.
