    Nice try, Dye-Per.

But criticizing someone's design of a page and criticizing a newspaper's style are two different things.

The designer has no say in whether subheads are centered. Nor does he have any say in whether the newspaper decides to italicize the headlines of its columnists.

A newspaper's style is pretty fair game. If someone thinks it sucks, no need for kid gloves.

I'm guessing a designer/editor/writer in Murfreesboro got stuck with a late CP photo that they couldn't do much with. Too bad, that white space to the right is a bear. And I don't know how much freedom they have with the ad, but if possible I'd can the graphic in the upper right corner. Make it black text on a white background, leaving the company's logo in the upper left as the only artsy-cartoonish element down there.

Maybe I'm late to this, but has anybody brought up the possibility that DyePack is noted hater of all things design (name deleted by Idaho), who under various aliases, has been banned from (at least) the Visual Editors, NewsDesigner and SportsDesigner boards (or blog comment sections), and may well have been banned from Poynter and NewsPageDesigner?

The arrogance and choice to hurl insults instead of discuss anything remotely meaningful is blowing his cover. If he's trying to get banned from every journalism message board, he still has this one to go, then he'll have to pay AND be sponsored for a sportsshooter membership before he can get banned there. That one should be tricky ...

Seriously, it's worth following ... not just so that blowing his cover here doesn't end up hijacking this whole thread ... but as moderators from the above boards can attest, there's nothing good that will come of his presence. In the meantime, the solution is to ignore him, but those familiar know that he will make that as difficult as possible.

Edit by Idaho: Just removed the names from your post. As big a horse's arse as some trolls are, we live by a few select rules here. The first one being no outing. But your point is taken well and methinks your suspicion of DyePack's identity is spot on. He's been asked to leave, banned and deleted from this site a few times already. Like herpes, though, he keeps coming back.

Oddly enough, the dude is fairly well tolerated and mostly civil over on the Association of Young Journalists board. www.youngjournos.org. There was an initial flair-up, notice the "Abuse of Forums" thread at the top, when he first made his presence known, but since then he's actually contributed some thoughtful info... as much as it pains me to say it.

Sorry to post one more off-topic, but if you can't get enough of the trolling:

The last few posts would seem to violate the "no outing" rule. But that's OK. The Wenalway site owner probably appreciates the additional traffic.

Traffic probably bumped up from one page view per day to six. Woohoo.

As for the outing, there's none happening after I edited out your name and usernames on other boards.

Well ... I got the thread off topic. So in the spirit of re-topicifying, here's a recent post from NPD, from the Scottsdale Tribune.

too much black and too many photos. The centerpiece also doesn't seperate itself enough from the left rail stories. Should have extended the black all the way into the headline with reverse type if a big black box is the onyl way to go.

For the package I'd use three or four of the photos and then play up the other photos bigger inside.

The flag is a waste of space. Nice try on the CP, but that's just way too much black. Going without black would have helped, and it might not have had to have been scaled down. The right raill is simple, but solid. I noticed that paper centers the one-column news heds. I actually like that better than leaving a bunch of white space on the right.

The CP headline looks detached from the rest of the piece. There's no space between the left rail and CP, and before scrolling down, I thought the NFL logo was part of the CP.
