That's the papers style for all section headers. Really looks out of place on this page, but in other sports pages, it's not as conspicous.

The left and right columns are awful gray. Wish there was a mug or facts box to break it up.

Is it just me or does the top of the centerpiece look weird with the border running through Joe's head?

I'd say they need to lay off the Vicodin at the Post-Gazette. This one is a snoozer, capped with "Steelers pummel Browns, 41-0, in Cleveland." Adding the place is a sign of someone falling asleep, then waking up and having to delete the "hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" on the screen.

It's all too vertical for me. I like the centerpiece, to a point...but I need some variety at some point.

    The upper left hed? Eesh.

The designer must have said, "I'm making them read the centerpiece, and screw all else." The CP was eye-catching, granted. But that thin, squeezed headline style throughout the page....yeesh.

Considering the content of that centerpiece ... a quite interesting, exclusive piece of information ... the intent may have been just that.

Their failing, I think, is that they didn't trumpet the information they had. It didn't even make it until the jump page.

It's exclusive that JoePa thought he should be Penn State's coach? I mean, I can't read the whole story, but the hed and deck make it look like it's just a story with Joe telling those trying to force him out to eff off.

The upper left hed is not only bad in the sense that it's not well-written, but if you squeeze the letting any more it turns into five lines of text crammed into four lines of hed. Nyet.

    See for yourself.

The good stuff starts about eight grafs in.

It goes from there into being an awfully good read. But they should have knocked people over the head with the new revelation.

You know what? You're right about that needing to be the main component. Hell of a piece. Reads well, flows, lets an inside look out.

BUT you can't sacrifice the rest of the page for that. That hed on the upper left is almost nightmare-inducing.

Do enjoy Chico Harlan's stuff (he's kept me coming back all year to read about a team I don't care about), but yeah, that front page needed something else.
