Yes, Rob, it is utter crap.
How is that an "aggressve idea" at "visually telling a story?"
And how is "utter crap" like that going to stop the hemhorraging? Do you think that disaster is going to attract readers?

I don't care if you say it smells like a rose and I don't want it to be all Rainbows and Butterflys. In fact, I would think there's something flawed with most the pages posted in here, cause that's where the discussion comes from. I don't want all positive. Hammer away, and there's plenty of stuff to hammer on this particular page.

I get offended when the comments are completely dismissive without a thought about how you could make it better. I realize that's never going to go away from here, but I wish there were less potshots and ego-placaters and more discussions about the design of the page.

It's visually telling the story of the two Super Bowl QBs. It's aggressive because you hate it.

I'm not interested in getting in a pissing match, so I'll shut up.

But one final, funny note: I just went to our budget meeting. We're doing a column on Big Ben and a feat on Hasselbeck. We want to package them together. Here's hoping my idea gets hammered on here tomorrow!

There's really nothing that was a potshot at the page in question. Sure, none of the comments were great, but nothing that I would classify as a true pot shot.

We're journalists. We should have thick skins. And if something that someone posts on an Internet message board is that offensive to someone, than I'd say that comment might be the least of that person's problems.

It's the same BS that designers are allowed to spew on a daily basis because no one tells them to stop.

    The page sucks.

I'm all for trying new ideas and thinking outside of the box.

That said, I don't think this idea works in the way it was done.

If you wanted to do the parallel faces, why not strip the MU game at the top and then make the package a horizontal package as the centerpiece. I think it would feel more natural that way. It wouldn't be as radical, so that's a negative I guess.

And maybe it's just me, but it seems like there's a LOT of type on that page ...

Wait a minute .... is this Scott McClellan?

As for the pot shot scale, are you using SportsJournalists.com as a reference or the rest of the civilized world? Cause there would be a pretty big difference!

For a 75-page design discussion, there really don't seem to be many people willing to put their own pages up for critique.

    Fear of being outed?

Or fear of being told it's "utter crap" about three dozen times?

Fear of being outed. One of mine has been posted and critiqued.

I said there don't seem to be many, not that there didn't seem to be any.

And I applaud anyone who puts his/her stuff up for comment.

I've put some of mine up, BT.

When people didn't like something, they offered reasons as to why or how they would have done things differently.
