Re: Running Detroit meltdown thread: Now with Mayoral jail time!

Remember, this isn't the first felony charge he's charged with. Just another one.

Although this could be the one that forces him out of office, if he's convicted. This case could go to trial quicker than the other one.

And really, Kwame could be spending a week in jail (til his next court hearing). I don't see how the circuit judge could say the district judge abused his discretion.

I did hear some of the judge's words today and he said he would have to do the same thing if it were Joe Sixpack.

Oh, what's even more funny right now? No one really knows who's in charge of the city right now?

Mayor in jail, deputy mail is on a leave because he was appointed interim head of the water and sewage department. So there is an interim deputy mayor that was appointed a couple weeks ago. Thing is he's had some problems with the law as well.

Cox to charge mayor with at least 1 felony in cop run-in

BY BEN SCHMITT • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • August 7, 2008

Attorney General Mike Cox is planning to charge Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick with at least one felony -- allegedly assaulting or obstructing officer “or duly authorized person” trying to serve court papers, according to person familiar with the incident.

The crime carries a maximum two-year prison term.

Cox is expected to announce charges Friday morning during a press conference in Detroit. His spokesman Matt Frendewey declined comment on the matter this afternoon.

The possible charges stem from a July 24 incident in which n which Kilpatrick allegedly shoved Wayne County Detective Brian White.

Great line by a bar/restaurant owner in a northern suburb:

"You can't do business with the city right now because the mayor only gets one phone call."

I don't even know the guy's name, but its not like the Dems are well liked in Michigan right now.

As for Cox, he knows this impacts his future elections too. He needs to be careful.

Has nothing to do with how well liked the Dems are. A primary race between three African-American women is one thing. A white Republican suburbanite is not going to carry a district with a predominant Demographic of African-Americans in Detroit.

It's comical. Today in the media center here at Oakland Hills, one of the local sports reporters does his stand-up from the middle of the room and his lead-in is all about how "the big story even here is about the Mayor of Detroit..."

Except for him, I haven't heard one person bring it up in the 10 hours I've been here.

It was being discussed in the lunch tent, but only by local people. I heard one national person say "That's the mayor?!?"

Not sure if that was brought up on pages 6 or 7 or not.

But why does this guy NEVER learn?
