Simply put Mustang: The people in charge of most papers don't have a plan.

So you talk on about how you want to read it on the net and you want it all for free. Hope you are not in this business. Because the all online product is going to cut major metro sports staffs in Detroit to probably one high school reporter, one college reporter who doesn't travel to any of the games, just compiles scores and briefs, one NFL reporter, and maybe one copy editor. They'll probably just let the reporters put up their stories unedited. And internet savvy people to do the "layout." The reporter will probably write his own headlines. Newspaper publishers simply gave up. Their egos made them want to enter the breaking news game online to beat TV and radio in the immediacy department. It ended up ending the business.

Just wondering where you got this information. We've been having lots of meetings about this new plan and none of this has been mentioned. As we have a union here, layoffs are monitored pretty closely. They say no layoffs or furloughs planned for us this year. So do you have some inside source on this or what?

My bad. In trying to argue my point, I was pontificating on my take on what will happen. No details. Accept my apology please.

OK, I do. It's bad enough to deal with the reality of what's going on in this industry, let alone the hypotheticals. So thanks for seeing that.

Does it even matter anymore? They've killed the product. Everyone is canceling subscriptions. Look no further than the comments on that story where readers say they will pay more, or do whatever it takes to keep things the way they are.

    • More that's new: Each department of the Free Press -- from Sports to Business to Life -- is going to offer something new and inviting. Sports, for example, will launch a new feature on March 30 called Michigan 6, devoted to year-round news about the Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, Lions, Spartans and Wolverines.

So what's the name for the year-round coverage they have now?

    More spin!

On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, when the Free Press will be for sale at thousands of outlets and coin boxes, you'll see a product packed with news, advertising and features you rely on.

But remember, not too much advertising, otherwise they could afford to send it to your door.

My understanding is they've sold out the ads in the launch edition. Of course, don't know where that'll go down the road.

Management takes a lot of shit on here, but aside from the people losing their jobs, there's still room for me to feel sorry for a real pro like Paul Anger, who is trying to spin and present all this less-than-stellar news with the best face he can.
