Detroit newspapers losing "daily" tag?

    Detroit keeps getting kicked in the groin. The papers still haven't gotten over the bitter guild strike from many moons ago. Then there was the paper switches and other not too great ideas.
    Now this.

    I'd like to know how the hell they're going to get their current subscribers to understand this.

    I'm paying for what? An email? A document I'll have to print off my own home computer with ink I'll have to pay for? Huh? No thanks. I'll cancel. Now.

    Not true. There are a number of papers, on both sides of the border, surrounding the city.

    They'll all fold in a snap, too, if automotive advertising dries up.

    Tell Grandma and Grandpa, who have had a subscription since they bought that first house in the suburbs for $10,500, that they have to do more with their computer than click "reply" to the grandkids' emails.

    That demographic does not embrace this kind of change. And that demographic has been keeping newspapers afloat.
     
  9. True. But word on the street is still that Detroit will eventually become the first metro area without a newspaper. (although I'll concede that the Canadian rags may be the last to fold).

    This idea is so terrible I would love to see the proposed ideas that were shot down. Maybe setting piles of money on fire was the second option.

    Here is how I would describe Gannett's dumb-ass decision to Michael Scott.

    - The Newspaper is losing money, because nobody is advertising.

    -To save money, the newspapers are going to layoff everyone and and put out a paper out for two days a week, and give the product away for free for five days a week.

    -This, of course, will mean they will lose 5 days worth of advertising!!!!

    LETS GO OVER THIS ONE MORE TIME.

    Less advertising means the newspapers are losing money. So in effort to make money or save money newspapers have devised a plan centered around the idea of preventing 71 PERCENT OF PRINT ADVERTISING.

    Not to mention, these newspapers will be losing money on 500,000 subscriptions. What subscriber is going to sit back and pay the same price for a 7-day a week newspaper when it all of a sudden is only published twice a week?

    Meanwhile, the newspaper isn't making money on the internet because internet ads don't generate as much money as print ads, and because they aren't charging for subscriptions.

    One last time, and maybe I'm missing something here, how can a newspaper make money or even stay in business when they aren't selling ads and they aren't selling subscriptions?
