Lots of people write books all the time for which there is no apparent urgent need.

But the RWSM keeps muttering about this like there's some deep dark motivation behind it, so guess what? I'm getting concerned again.

I was going to say... I think it came out in 2005 or so.

No, he got the deal in 1991 or so, it came out in 1995.

They re-released it after his speech at the convention in the summer of 2004.

    According to infallible Wiki:

A fair number of copies of the paperback are available on abebooks.com so it cannot have been all THAT rare.

"Dreams From My Father" definitely was published way before he was in politics. Like Zeke said, it was because he made a name for himself as the first black editor of the HLR.

Obama was very interested in becoming a serious writer at one point. Some close to him speculated that was his ulterior motive to community organizing - to get a feel for gritty, urban people and places that he could novelize.

I'm pretty sure that W. still drinks beer, and I think it's ridiculous that he has to pretend he doesn't.

    The rundown:

    Drinking beer: OK.
Drinking beer and then driving: Not OK.

Why Americans don't understand that distinction is beyond me.

It was his narrative to the Evangelical community that he married Laura, got sober, found Jesus, in that order.

Yet another black eye for the newspaper business.

I get that. It's just such a false dichotomy. I have no evidence to support this, but my guess is that he was never an alcoholic. Not clinically. He was immature. But you can't say that: "I learned to handle my liquor."

I don't doubt that he was an alcoholic, but the only way to get past that with a lot of people is to say you don't drink anymore, because ... well, that's what people want to hear, whether it's true or not...
