And you can't tell me that Mr. Publisher, who signs the paychecks, and Mr. Mid-Level Corporate Drone, who signs HIS paychecks, and Big Heavy Corporate Honcho, who signs HIS checks, who 85% of the time are raving right-wing shriekers, don't send memos down to the peons in the newsroom ordering that everything possible is to be done to make the M. N. and anybody who supports him look like a raving radical, atheist, pinko socilist commie mooslim?

    FOLLOW THE MONEY.

Libburral pinko journalists can sit around and talk about how they like Obama, or more accurately how they hate the RWSM, and how they would like to present things so they make Obama look good and make the wingnuts look like the shrieking idiots they are, but then Mr. Publisher calls them into the office every day telling them to rewrite headlines to make Obama look worse, yank anything positive, and plaster anything bad in 80-point type across the top of 1A (and the website).

It doesn't matter what the libburral pinko media would "like" to do. What matters is what the Big Boys TELL them to do.

Liberals have journalism, conservatives have religion. Fair trade?

It always amazes me how people can spend decades in newsrooms and not have a clue as to how a newspaper comes together.

Those who sign the checks call the shots.

THAT's how a newspaper comes together.

Seriously. Many, many times I've been told to change headlines or rewrite leads that didn't put forth what higher-ups deemed as "what we want it to say."

I'm with YGBFKM. I've never, ever heard directions to change the tone of a head or a lede to advance a political agenda. Never.

I had an editor who, among other things, would regularly come out of his corner office and announce that he wanted somebody to write an article about some topic that would say such-and-such, because he had an idea for an editorial that would play off that article.

Do you guys work at Fox News?

    (Sorry, no outing.)

Nope. It was a 15,000-circulation (and dropping rapidly) daily newspaper.

Yes, I'm sure it is very similar in its impact and the way it is run to the Washington Post, New York Times and Boston Globe so I can see why it would be relevant to this discussion.... ::)

Who mentioned those papers at any point in the little thread to which I was contributing, zag-douche?

But since you want to play the big-time game, the paper in question is owned by the second largest media chain in Canada, controlled by a nutbar who established his own right-wing TV network which was quickly dubbed Fox News North and which has close ties with the ruling Conservative government.

Journalism is journalism is journalism no matter where it is practised. Then again, if you knew fuck-all about journalism, you wouldn't need to have that explained to you (not that you want to even consider anyone else's point of view, but whatever).

I work at a very large paper. I've also worked at medium size papers. It has gone on at all of them.
