As one who has been in this guy's proverbial shoes (sigh), I can tell you exactly how it probably all went down. At least from his point of view.

A few months back, on a thread about "how to pick up a woman in a bar", I wrote the following:

Always tell a smart girl that she's pretty and a pretty girl that she's smart.

Jessica Dorrell is one of those women who, all her life, has probably had teenage boys and men stuttering and bumbling when striking up conversation with her and always commenting on her beauty.

Bobby Petrino is many things but he is not an idiot -- at least not when it comes to getting what he wants. When he is trying to lock down a recruit, he probably needs a different "sell" item than the other 100 schools.

When he met Dorrell, he probably told her that she's intelligent and bright and not just "dang, yew must be them thar purdiest girl in all o' Arkansaw..."

He probably charmed her through pleasantries about how smart she is. Then Dorrell goes home and thinks about this, especially when she looks at her fiance. He's a young guy and working his way up the chain but, here is, Bobby F'n Petrino saying that she's intelligent.

And she finds herself smitten.

After a few weeks, he probably says, "I think you're really smart and should have this newly-created position within the football department." THIS is ultimate hubris... even *I* recognize this.

Petrino is probably a guy who can make amazing eye contact when trying to sign a speedster. A woman can be no different. Just as men love beauty and a certain physique, women are attracted to confidence and power (NOT necessarily money -- but, given Petrino's average physical characteristics, the money probably helped in this case).

How it happens:
They're both feeling empty. Perhaps Petrino's home life is one where his wife doesn't acknowledge his daily victories (a major signee, an endorsement deal, etc). She probably got tired of him after his first big check at Louisville.

Perhaps Dorrell is stuck with the "do I marry this swimming coach or not" dilemma as wedding day approaches? I imagine both were adrift at the exact same time and it happened. Quickly.

I know. I've been there.

I was once at a Barnes & Noble, buying something in the kids department for a neighbor's birthday party and in walked this woman - same age as me - who was stunning. Every man in the bookstore was looking at her. I had no business even catching her radar. Eyes locked. I was confident, bold and funny. I commented on her intelligence. Lots. We both talked about our unhappy home lives.

Ten days later, it's a full-blown affair. That's how quickly it can happen. Probably would have been the next day if she wasn't in "women's ministry" at her church.

The next day, I get a note: "what made you so different is that you don't just see beauty. You see that I am a thoughtful and intelligent person". That's how it happens.

Back to the Petrino/Dorrell Mess:
- I am shocked if he did all of the communication via a state-issued/university-issued phone. That's unbelievably stupid (just as the actual actions were). Also an amateur move. Use "tossaway email accounts" to communicate. Use Google Voice for texting (untraceable).

- This meeting 20 miles from Fayetteville is the most plausible element of an affair. They meet in an out-of-the-way place where they can spend time and, they hoped, not run into anyone they know. For Petrino, this is a special challenge and may explain why he wasn't wearing a helmet. (He couldn't leave the house with TWO helmets missing -- the wife might notice this). It would probably still be going on if he hadn't wrecked the bike.

Yet the lie - not to his family - but to the school and media -- will do him in. What he needed to do, to save his hide, was apologize to Dorrell right then and there and remind her that she would have to catch her own way back to her car (or to town). Whatever money he had on him he should have given to her.

Petrino had many, MANY "outs" in this situation and screwed it up from the moment the bike was wrecked.

I still remember the conversation and it was about back-to-school shopping and that she was looking to get a backpack that evened out the weight distribution for her kids.

I probably made some comment that not everyone would think like that and that she should be proud of going the extra step. I could sense her swooning almost immediately.

This "tell a pretty woman she is smart" theory is gold. Really is. Worked with every woman I pursued -- and they were all incredibly attractive. Don't compliment someone on something they already know. Compliment them on something no one else does.

As for whether this highway was deserted or not, you can still "get away".

If I was planning a "meet" with a mistress, I would have:
- Looked through Google Earth for a place where I could ditch my car undetected -- but also with a "second route out", in case someone else would pull up.
- Preferably a spot with heavy foliage (trees/leaves and such) and high grass (cornfields in August are actually the best).

Especially in that part of the world, it's not like Petrino could just get a hotel room unless he sent someone ELSE to book it for him and that would be letting a third person "in the know". Dorrell wasn't going to check in herself, solo, to a local hotel and Petrino couldn't be seen anywhere in the area going into a room.

Reading between the lines it sounds like he probably did not have time to even consider this as an option. It sounds like the car that wound up giving them a ride back towards town arrived on the scene too quick.

Also, I've spent some time in Fayetteville and the road they were on is not an out-of-the-way place. It's a two-lane state highway. While it's not heavily trafficked it isn't exactly deserted either.

EDIT: If you Google Map Petrino's home address, the intersection where Dorrell was dropped off at her car is roughly halfway between his home and the town she lives in.

Soooo.. they meet up, hop on the bike and ride in the direction of Elkins (where she lives) do whatever it is they do wherever they do it and he wrecks the bike on the way back to her car.

Looking at the Google Map now. That's very risky to meet halfway between the houses.

I am very interested in what the investigation into cell phone records will bring. Either way, Petrino is screwed:

- If it comes out that all of his correspondence is on his university phone, he's screwed.
- If it comes out that none of his correspondence with Dorrell is on his phone or email, then that shows he is a playa of the highest order.

Edit: Yet what I wrote on the last page is a plausible "mindset" into how it happens. I surmise that very very few people walk down the aisle and think, "Gosh, I'm going to become a scumbag and a horrible person someday".

No one thinks this. Well, hopefully, no one thinks this.

Life happens. Sin happens. People grow apart but choose not to fight because there are kids at stake. Spouses get wrapped up in work. Libidos wane as the everyday tension builds up.

I went ten years without being told I was attractive at home. (I'm not ugly). When a beautiful women says it, it makes your day.

Especially for successful men, when we accomplish something big at work -- say, a promotion or make a major sale or give a speech -- we think we can conquer the world. Why else do you see "captains of industry", successful coaches, politicians get caught up in this? It's like a drug.

About a month into the relationship with "that woman, Miss Barnes & Noble", I had to give a major speech in front of economic leaders. 30 minute speech. The whole time, she was sending me hot texts as she watched from the back of the room at her company's table.

Women love to think that a powerful or influential man is theirs. Miss B&N would not have gone to McDonald's, watched from the Play Place and texted the fry cook during the lunch rush.

I don't understand the need to hide your credit cards. Did you not trust your paramours?

One always insisted on being called a "paramour". But I digress...

In case something happens where I need to bust out the card (a major car repair, for example). Why hide the credit cards?

Yes to the previous reply. More than one person has checked into a hotel and, out of habit, used their regular credit card "for incidentals" instead of a prepaid VISA card that is not tied to a specific person. The second you quit thinking is when you get tripped up.

Also, let's say that I'm "planning a Petrino" style get together. If I am carrying my wallet with me on a remote trail/section of woods with said paramour, I do NOT want the wallet to fall out of my pocket and, by dumb luck, lose a credit card in the woods 40 miles from home.

Cash I can lose. A credit card is traceable.

One think that baffles me with Freq and all his precautions. He does not seem to consider grass stains , mud or poison ivy.

- At least $500 in cash somewhere in my car. The few times my spouse would drive it, I would take the cash and put it in the garage, inside of a Rick Reilly book that has been collecting dust for a decade.
- A Prepaid VISA card, usually the $250 card, concealed somewhere in the car, in case of a jam. Specifically, I needed a place that didn't take cash but only a card.
- No more land-line at home. Harder to track me.

The most important part is to find someone with the same demographics as you. Kids the same age. No desire to split up their house. This is actually what confused me about the Petrino/Dorrell connection. If the woman was a 35-year-old with kids and a husband, I bet it never comes out. Why? Because, on that Sunday night, she would have been home with the kids making dinner instead of out on a motorcycle with Petrino.

Eventually, my guess is that Dorrell would have nagged and nagged him into spending more time with her. There is a certain level of "care and feeding of a mistress" that is required, especially one that is not married (yet) and doesn't have kids. A 40-year-old mom with three kids and a workaholic husband doesn't need as much pampering as a 25-year-old hottie without those major life obligations.

Shoot, the 40-year-old cougar will usually do anything with a decent-looking guy if the man just asks about her day and listens. Trust me.

One of the more unusual elements I kept was on Facebook. With a nod to Plimpton and the story about Sid Finch, a post might read:

"Do u forever fight your stress? All time, thus work out."

Take the first letter of each word.

One former paramour would see the post and know I was asking to meet her at "Duffy's At Two". She would be in the parking lot of this Irish bar... at two.

The advice may be worth a slow clap but I am a douchebag. It's why I quit. Too many nightmares about hardly seeing my kids again.

Why did I start? A void at home, like most men who do this. Married too young. Wife quits putting out once kids arrive.
Somewhere around 35, I start running to get myself in better shape. Still little affection from wife. Pressures of providing build up. Stress fills the house.

Then I start chatting with former coworker on FB. Starts innocent but then takes a more tawdry turn. That went on for a year. When we broke up, I was broken. This led to my Tiger Woods Phase. 9 women in a year. Some online but three were "pick ups". All had the same story. Unhappy marriage, kids, high end lifestyle.

Two of them ended up divorced, including one I was ready to destroy my life for... Err, I mean "start a new life with".

The screwy part is that I still run into four of them in town. We will nod an flash a quick smile and then return to our shopping.

It just seems that with all of your work to set up, you deserved a bed and a post coital hot shower instead of a corn field and a few handi wipes.

I had one that wanted to share an encounter in a hot air balloon. I drew the line at that.

I truly think Petrino and Dorrell were driving to some secluded patch so that he would "run the spread" on her in the beauty and greenery of The Natural State.

I think Petrino will be out, within a week. Once Long and the administration remember that, back in 2007, he was probably going to leave eventually (and it would be ugly, ala Louisville or Kentucky), they will realize, in the long run, they're better off for it.

And that's also why I finally gave it up over the winter. The chase was intoxicating -- even more than the actual "acts".

But I do live in fear -- of the mail each day. Of a phone call. Of a blog. That fear is the price I do pay every day, at least on this planet.

However, I did want to share what I think Petrino's mindset could be in this situation. Like I've said, I've been there...and with people as fetching as Dorrell. It is a very silent slice of our culture right now. People in unhappy marriages that won't/can't divorce because of the economy. The husband who makes all the money but ignores the wife. The wife who is "along for the free ride" and they stay together for the kids. It's everywhere.

Also why I had to get out.

My experience is actually probably more common than you may think. Unlike drug abuse or drunks, adulterers really don't have anywhere to go for support or advice, other than a handful of websites and message boards (yes those are out there).

The B&N story is 100% true. I complimented her on her intelligence and after a ten minute chat, she told me to Facebook her. And that is how it went.

She did know "of me" when I said hi to her as I am in the public eye, somewhat, where I live. So was she and that's why she was at the business convention speech.

I know I am a scumbag.

However, for years, I tried and tried to get my wife to, ahem, "put out" like she did before marriage. Nope. Nothing worked. After ten years of dissatisfaction, I really had two choices:

- Divorce her and we all plunge into financial peril and put kids on a risky path.
- Fulfill my desires (which are not unreasonable. I am just another guy who needs it once a week) but do it on an outsourcing basis.

So I did.

And it turned out to be a year long stretch that made me feel satisfied, desired, wanted and pursued for the first time in 15 years.

Yes, I took great lengths to keep them quiet. I had some ground rules: a woman had to be married, a homeowner, with younger kids and a good standard of living. That way she wouldn't break up her own family.

One poster commented on how low or self esteem would a middle age woman have to have to "get it on" in a parking lot. Peeps of the SJ board, there is an entire generation of 40 year old women who are neglected by their bread winning husbands. They're beautiful on the outside but hollow inside.

All of the ones I was with had the same type of husband: Rich/well to do, workaholic, verbally abusive, wouldn't listen to the wife. But there wa a difference: none of them "took charge" sexually. So I did. I would tell them what I wanted them to wear. Where we would meet. What we would do.

I would write them detailed and elaborate erotic fantasies, tailored to their preferences and desires. Each and every one that read a fantasy I wrote about them slept with me within a week.

As for time away from family, like many of you, I have a non traditional schedule. I don't golf. I don't fix cars. I suppose chasing tail was my hobby. Nearly all encounters happened during school hours.

I am retired physically but I still flirt.

As for karma, yeah it will get me. For a long time, I wish my wife would have an affair. That way, I would know there is still a living sexual being in there.

For any women reading this, the easiest way to prevent your man from becoming "mayhem...like me" is to keep the sex coming at nearly the same levels as before your marriage.

A thought on power and Petrino.

Once Dorrell slept with him, SHE had all of the power in the relationship. She could ruin him at any moment. So I don't think she could win harassment.

Also why I had to have every mistress (except one) break up with me. For me, "getting in" was easy. The exit strategy is where the real plan comes in. If you dump a woman you're having an affair with, you're at her mercy.

As for being careful, it may seem paranoid but I am certain all of the women I was involved with appreciate never having gotten caught.

One was close.

She had been texting my phone on occasion (before I discovered google voice). After she filed for divorce, her ex's attorneys looked at her phone records. Fortunately, those 9 texts were during weekdays and she said she needed to reach me for some business questions so it worked out.

After that I was extra cautious.

Celebrity? No. But I had been in the public eye, mainly through my businesses (think Peter Gallagher's character from American Beauty). I'm sure it helped somewhat but, with that also comes an extra layer of discretion. Perhaps the women knew I wouldn't "go crazy" at some later date because I, too, had much to lose.

There was an element of "trial and error" in the women I got to know. After the first two or three, I could steer the courtship into a pattern that almost always worked.

Here is how I would do it:
- Listen to everything she says. In the second or third email/chat, ask where her favorite vacation spot or place in the world is.

- About a week later, once I ask if she wants a "hot story", make HER the main character and make this "favorite vacation spot" the setting for a 3,000-word fantasy. It wouldn't be as cheesy as the Penthouse Forum but it would be just as graphic.

Note: The B&N woman, who leads the women's ministry at her church, told me after I wrote a long novella about "us" in the mountains of Argentina, wrote me, "that is some good shit you write. You should sell that." Another woman, a 38-year-old Mormon mother of 5 who looked like actress Kelly Lynch, took a story I wrote of "us" in the Phillippines and demanded to meet me the next day. Until that point, she wanted nothing more from me than being just a friend.

- Once she's all worked up, make a date.

And that would be it. Why? Because they like the attention. All of them had very successful husbands who made a lot of money but stopped courting them. Often, the men would work 10-hour days, play golf with their buddies and ignore their beautiful wives. Also, the men would usually "let themselves go" and then show up, demanding sex from their wives.

I would merely give them the attention they were not getting at home. None of these motorcycle-riding, obsessive-golfing husbands would ask how their day is going or serenade them with a song on the piano in their living room that is gathering dust. I would. Playing "September Morn" for a woman was like Colt .45. It worked every time.

One final nugget before I return to watching the final round.

The day after Christmas. Wife sends me to a packed department store to return something that she didn't like. I grumble about it until I remember the possibilities.

I show up at this store with a line of about 20 people in front of me at customer service. I'm standing next to a tall, thin, 40ish woman with thick lips, straight brown hair and green eyes. No kids with her.

We talk about returns in a minute. I determine from what she has told me (and some clues on her keychain) that she has two elementary age kids and lives in the "well-to-do" school district.

Me: "And what are you returning?"

Her: "Oh, just these boots." She pulls them out of the bag and shows them. "You see, I am wearing an identical pair."

Me (talking a long look at the knee-high boots below where her skirt ends): "and you don't need a second pair?"

Her: "Nah, I'd rather get something else."

There's my opening.

Me: "But, by returning those boots, you will be doing the city a disservice. No one else will look as good in those boots as you do."

Her (breaking out in a smile): "And when was the LAST time you said that to a woman?"

Me: "Only the last time I saw a tall, confident woman with a killer smile. Where are you going next after this?"

Her: "Target".

Me: "If I'm over there in 20 minutes and you walk into Starbucks, I'll buy you a smoothie or whatever you want."

She was over there in 20 minutes. We didn't progress any further - which was fine - but the half hour of conversation made my day. Plus, I returned my wife's items at Target, too.

For the females who signed up for the same website I did... Nope. We were all there for the same thing. Two of them had been through late stage cancer and had husbands that weren't attracted to them because of scars on intimate places. They were gorgeous women who were ignored. I gave them attention and they gave me affection. In fact, one of them passed away from brain cancer in the fall. For the three who did not: No. They all eventually broke it off with me. Two of them did get divorced but they were both well on the way when I entered the scene.

The guilt I felt, within, for my family. That's why I got out. The "action" was the best of my life (by far) but I could keep doing it. For example: Sundays are the only days I am usually at peace because there is no mail. Every time I walk out there, I am terrified.

Yes, if I were at Talladega, I would have a field day, between the fat husbands and the women who are never told they're intelligent.

I did try, for years, to progress through couples therapy. Nothing seemed to stir her from the funk.

That's why I made the fateful decision to step out. Yet I also decided that, if I was going to do this, I would find the hottest women I could. And I did, largely through confidence and being chatty and listening.

I have been good this year. If I can make it to summer, it should be good. Summer is the "low season" for this type of behavior among the cougar crowd because school is out.

Last May, it was frantic as everyone in "the lifestyle" was hooking up before last day of school. Sort of like last call.

Put out, even if you don't feel like it. Within reason, of course.

That's it.

Of course, women don't want to hear this because it isn't empowering and doesn't involve feelings and love languages. I can't sell this in a one page pamphlet for $14.95 but, for men, that's all a wife really has to do.

I made more money, provided larger homes, newer cars, raised the kids and kept myself "at my fighting weight". I made her life much easier than it was on wedding day.

And I was rejected hundreds of times.

I was even fine going from 5x a week to once a week. Then it became once every three months. Counseling. Wooing. Nothing worked.

I ask: What would you do?

Well, Barnes & Noble took out the couches a couple years back during the recession. Not that I noticed that or anything.

The most "target rich" areas were not B&N but Target, Whole Foods and the Trader Joe's. Also any high-end shoe stores during school hours. There is your nightclub for the cougar demographic.

It does take two people to keep the fire going. I tried for years but couldn't compete with romance novels and reality TV for attention. So I focused on my kids and raising them.

Yet it wasn't until I approached 40 that I saw how a confident and successful man can captivate certain women. Especially women with an unfulfilled "bucket list" of erotic encounters who feel ignored.

Cook a little for her. Play the piano for her. Listen to her. Take her to a picnic in a secluded park. She'll feel like a princess.

I have tried this at home and was told not to make a mess in the kitchen and that the piano is keeping her from watching TV. That's how it starts.

True story. Prior to working in a newsroom and doing some typesetting, I was a secretary. Which of course means that I always used two spaces after a period.

About two weeks in typesetting in the newsroom, the night editor pulls me to the side and says, "We have to talk to about what you do after a period."

Old dude freaked me the fuck out!

Every now and then, I revert to my old ways and put two spaces, just to irritate those around me.

Freqposter has created a nice little niche on the board for himself.

From his moniker, a homophone of "freak" and a reference to his likely "frequent" prominence on the board under another name, to his vividly crafted stories which, in short order, disappear into the mist of memory save for the forward-thinking posters who wisely quote them (too few!).

He must love the attention. He's a brand. We're all just camped outside Barnes & Noble at midnight waiting for his next release (oh, that's a pun!).

He appears on cue, then poof, he's gone, like Keyser Soze and his trace of existence almost totally removed. And we eat it up. I'm guilty of it. Hell, I've tried to search out some of his most famous works here to no avail.

So I must ask, did our friend ivebeenthere ever follow through on his/her post below from the Petrino thread? (ivebeenthere, a suspicious name in itself. Reminiscent one of freq's prominent lines. A single post. Last seen April 12. An accomplice in the myth making? Hmm.)

If so, I'd love to read freq's anthology from the Petrino thread as I wait for my latest Forum.
