Do you play tennis with a Jack Kramer racket?

My South African father-in-law, 83 and still a good golfer, still uses this Bobby Locke club, a 3 and a half wood. If there is such a thing.

No, but I went to high school with Dodo Cheney’s granddaughter.

That right there is the perfect time to make a comment about knowing where to hit his wife's sweet spot. Golfer talk! Just golfer talk! Nothing to see here nor get upset about. Moving right along..

I absolutely adore my 7-wood. Hit it about 230. Can move it either way if I need to.

    Ahh ... golfer talk.

My Dad recently passed away and I have his clubs. He played with a set of Ping Eye 2 irons for 30-plus years, beautiful clubs that I'll get restored and play with every once in a while. Crazy to read up about them and discover the lofts -- basically five degrees weaker throughout the set compared to my one-year-old Pings (because all the club companies now are selling length, and the sneakiest way is to jack the lofts). Dad was an excellent player with tons of length, usually 2-3 clubs longer than me. But now that I know the loft difference, it's really like 3-4 clubs. He's nodding with satisfaction somewhere.

    I too have persimmons woods ... a 1980s Tom Weiskopf set with a driver, 3-wood, 5-wood.

You do see heads turn when they hear the "thwack!" of a real wood off the tee.

Then those heads turn away again, so I won't see them laughing, as my drive takes a sharp slice after about 175 yards ...

I think I've mentioned this before ... if you're playing no more than 5 rounds of golf a year, and are mainly doing it for the fun of spending four hours with family and friends, there's no reason to spend hundreds of dollars to acquire the latest hi-tech driver.

Besides, the putter is by far my biggest problem club, and 99.9 percent of my putting woes fall on the user rather than the equipment!

I went to a golf shop in a strip mall in Las Vegas. Got a used Adams driver and a used PING hybrid. They were cleaned and had new grips. Also bought a pair of new Footjoy golf shoes. Spent about $135. I couldn't hit the wood driver anyway. I know it was too heavy for me when I bought it when I was 21. Now it is really too heavy for me because I'm old and weak.

I miss my old wood 3-wood. Inherited my first set of clubs from my grandfather, a really good player for decades. That 3-wood was my favorite club for about 20 years.

FYI, looks like the Tour's annual stop in Fort Worth at Colonial is not a slam dunk for the future. Title sponsor is dropping out, firms aren't rushing to fill the gap, and the Colonial membership ain't exactly hot at the idea of making up the slack.

Thanks to the PGA Tour, the end may be in sight for Colonial

This is an organization just begging for its comeuppance. The next recession, whenever it comes (not predicting) could decimate the Tour.
