SFIND, I'm still new to this photo thing, a brief dalliance from a couple years ago aside. Indeed, I did move to aperture mode later yesterday, and I felt like I was getting some better shots in that mode. Thanks for the feedback; think I'll stick with that.

  2. Then you will be out the business soon. That's where it's headed, so either pick up the skill or start planning an early retirement (or regular retirement I guess depending on age). You're blind if you can't see that is where it is headed.

    Glad to know it helped.

Also, here's a good resource guide you might find handy sometime: http://digital-photography-school.com/digital-photography-tips-for-beginners

Haven't been around this thread in a while, but first off, let me say I really like Rhody's photos above.

I hadn't been out shooting in a while, so I thought I would while at the lake yesterday, celebrating the 4th up in the mountains. Thought this dog photo turned out OK with the water splashing:

I also finally took some time to mess around with different perspectives. Amazing how much better this shot of my friends looks ...

... when you get down low (obvious post edit aside):

Also, I really liked this shot for whatever reason. Mountains are blurry for a reason. Tried focusing the opposite direction, but didn't like it much.

What all has everyone else been shooting the past few months?

Took some cool photos of a bridge in my state during a recent night photo shoot. This one is one of my favorites:

I've been learning a lot of long exposure work lately and it's been pretty cool to experiment outside of my comfort zone. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to try something new.

Oh and this was the actual moon itself:

That bottom photo is so simple but so cool.
I've been shooting my child, but I need to try some other stuff. My buddy and his wife's kid turns one Monday and I told them I'd like to try and do some portraits. They were pumped because I shot their photos of her when she was a newborn - nothing crazy, but got some good ones - and I'm gonna try and do some posed stuff. I'm not super confident, but I figure its good practice.
A couple weeks ago the wife and I were at the beach. I took photos of my daughter playing in the water and sent it to the local TV station as a nominee for their "picture of the day." Won me a $25 gift card to a local photo shop.

I used to shoot a lot when I was SE for a couple of weekly papers. Since one of my best friends is a sports photographer, he gave me tips on how best to shoot and I became pretty good at action stuff (baseball, football, basketball) as well as easier stuff for features and the like. Once I became a sports reporter for a daily paper, I didn't do much shooting except for the occasional mug shot (Player of the Week, etc).
While I'm able to use a smartphone or my digital camera for simple stuff (haven't needed to for work), I'd prefer to buy another more complex camera if I have to start shooting action shots again. I don't think my 35mm cameras would do me much good anymore since everything is digital now.

If you're doing any real shooting you should spring for a DSLR. An iPhone is fine in a pinch if you need to grab a mug shot, but if you're doing much more, you need something better, especially if you't shooting sports. Plus you'll find they are great for non-work things as you can see on this thread. Definitely worth it.

I love this pic because of how difficult it was to shoot this because of the lack of light in the venue. No flash.
