I was looking at some other boards where people post on this subject, and I was appalled at the number of "It's my seat and I'll recline if I please" attitudes.

Unfortunately, that's the spirit of the times.

It saddens me and causes a little break in my otherwise freakishly idealistic heart.

I do the same thing. I enjoy the exasperation as they look at the person next to them and bitch because their seat won't go back.

i had no idea people felt this way. I've never NOT had someone recline the seat in front of me. Nor have I ever considered making myself uncomfortable for the comfort of the person behind me. Sorry.

I never recline if there's someone behind me.
    First class, I will.

I always ask for a window seat so I can at least lean and sleep that way.
And ideally it's a window seat in the emergency row.

That's why I always try and get the emergency exit row. Full-recliners aren't my biggest gripe. Crying/shrieking baby is No. 1. Old guy with wet cough is number 2.
    Thank goodness for headphones.

Yeah, I'm definitely guessing this poll isn't representative of the flying population at large. I think most people will decide to recline or not with no thought to if there is a person behind them or not.

Personally, I think it should be ok for anyone to recline on an international flight. You're in the air that long, you deserve to get as comfortable as you can.

I don't recline, primarily because I can't really sleep on an airplane, so it's better for me to be upright anyway to read, work on the laptop etc.

The one exception I'll make for reclining is if I'm getting a hummer... ;D

  9. I'm in full agreement with Boom.

Anyone selfish enough to recline into my lap is going to do so at their own risk.

    Especially when I'm eating.

I will repeatedly take things in and out of the seat pocket, I will kick the seat and I will use their seatback for sitting down/standing up.

The lady sitting in front of me on a recent trip was in the emergency exit row and reclined on me. She had all that room in front of her, but it wasn't enough. Ridiculous.

These are the same people who bring carry-on luggage aboard that absolutely has no shot of fitting into the overhead. Then they stand their mystified that their suitcase doesn't fit, clogging up the aisle, and they try over and over again. Check your bag, sit down and STFU.

All kidding aside, I was on a flight from Phoenix to NY that made an unscheduled landing in Albequerque instead, after a woman reclined her seat into the lap of a very large and angry man. He shoved her seat so hard that she flew forward, smashing her nose on the closed tray table in front of her.

Blood everywhere....the nose was completely decimated, and there was no way the woman could have handled the 5 hour flight (not to mention the seat smasher). Plane landed in Albuquerque, where the man was arrested and the woman got an unexpected nose job.

So let's be careful up there.

It's kind of like the road rage phenomena.

You might be fully within your rights to recline as you please, and god love ya for not giving a crap about anyone else.

But sometimes, as right as you may be, it's not worth it. :D

My wife and I were recently flying from Jamaica to Atlanta (about a 3-hour flight).... my wife had a Jabba The Hutt-esque seat-stealer (the kind of person who is so fat they bleed into your seat (Jabba was left, wife was middle, I was on the aisle).
About 2 seconds after it was allowed, the (rude) woman in front of my wife shoved her seat all the way back. Wife said something just loud enough for her to hear, then put random knees into the back of the seat whenever she could the rest of the flight. Woman didn't put her seat up until we were circling for landing, but she sure as hell felt the wrath for that flight - in words and actions.
