The Volquez apology about his suspension reminded me that many people take medications and are undone by the side effects. For athletes, the side effect may be a suspension or loss of a medal. For the rest of the world, it may be life threatening complications from taking an over the counter drug.

It was a weekend full of medical stuff in the news. I couldn't pick one particular story, so this week's web has a little bit on four. There is a little Wisconsin theme with a Brewer announcer, former quarterback and former cheese league training camp team all involved.

    Thanks for reading.

Tiger's return to golf glory has hit another bump in the road with another physical malady. Cervical radiculopathy describes pain and numbness due to inflammation of a nerve root where it exits the spinal column. More in this week's web entry.

This past weekend was Prom for many local high schools. Sadly, we had more than a few deaths in our area from car wrecks. It's a reminder to cherish those around you when you are able.

Doc - just heartbreaking. Can't imagine anything sadder. Kids at one of the happiest times of their lives - snuffed out in an instant.

The downside to being an elite athlete is the punishment one inflicts upon the body to maintain performance. Most people having fluid drained off of a knee a la Kobe, would decrease the activity that caused the knee to swell in the first place. More about knee effusions in this week's web post.

    Thanks for reading.

We take our bodies fro granted sometimes, especially the little things that it does to repair itself when minor injuries happen. Imagine how much damage might occur if we took away your ability to clot blood normally. Such is the plight of Brian Vickers who is sidelined with a DVT and pulmonary embolus and depending upon why his blood does what it does, his career may be over.

This week's entry talks about Jeremy Shockey and seizures. There is a 4-5% that a person will have a seizure sometime in their life and having a seizure does not mean that the person has epilepsy. More on the net.

General Patraeus had a senior moment yesterday, either falling asleep or passing out. He made light of it presuming that he was weak from missing breakfast. Most people would not blow off a passing out event and pretend that it was for lack of Wheaties. More about syncope on the web.

Figured General Patraeus is one of our few leaders that we can count on. Watched hearings with great anticipation only see him collapse. Hope is ok. Read that he did have prostate radiation therapy last year.

Steve Smith's broken arm isn't that exciting except that it highlights a philosophy change in orthopedics in the past generation. Many fractures are now getting internal fixation repairs(plates and screws using Black and Decker drills) instead of just a cast and time. Returning people of all abilities to activity, not just athletes, has become the new mantra.

Thanks for reading and for calling and writing with questions. Always happy to help.

Even those in positions of power and authority can fail to understand their limits when it comes to drinking and driving. It had to be the story this week on the website.
