Preventing death in athletes is certainly easier than trying to revive them once death happens. However screening kids for potential causes of sudden death is expensive, but does it have to be? This all starts with research from Stanford that says EKGs don’t work as a screening tool. More this week on the website.

The blog took a week off for a quick trip to Kiev, home of Euro 2012.

This week it’s about back pain, Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz and too many confusing look-alike terms to describe issues with the lumbar spine.

The past week was filled with medical sadness on the playing field. High school football players died from heatstroke in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina while a coach died in Texas. An NFL football player had a seizure due to an arteriovenous malformation(AVM).

But this week we talk about Juan NIcasio, the pitcher who was felled by a batted ball and suffered a fractured neck. Aside from the fact that few baseball players ever break the first cervical vertebra, it’s a reminder that neck fractures can hide themselves. More this week on the web.

A hidden benefit from pro sports is watching how injuries are treated and how that may one day help the people in the stands. What can this week’s NFL knee injuries can teach us? More on the website.

ER docs have a love hate relationship with chest pain patients. It’s good to make the right call but there are minefields that can lead the diagnosis and treatment efforts astray. John Farrell left the Toronto Blue Jay dugout with chest pain and fortunately ended up “only” with pneumonia but who knows what else the doctors thought might be going on.

Technical issues on the website prevents me from posting this week’s article about Rafael Nadal’s press conference cramps and slide under the table. Expect the article tomorrow. Sorry about the delay.
